ds is 5 and has never really seen commercial TV. Movies like Cars, bugs life, but nothing violent. I read/hear about Kindergarten kids going to see Indiana jones and the like. Am I the only one who thinks this is weird? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My ds hasn't seen stuff like that either but I don't think it's weird. I remember my dad taking me to all kinds of movies when I was a kid. [ Reply | More ]

^^my ds has never shown an interest in that stuff on tv or dvds so I dont bother going outside for it either. He likes the news and old musicals. Weird, I know. [ Reply | More ]

I know. I always watch it with him and change the channel if things are going in a bad direction (he's well under 5 so he doens't object to that). [ Reply | More ]

Hi, we didn't do any commerical tv either. And I will say, it has its pros and cons. DS was a little left out in the superhero department. When the other children on the playground were Spiderman, Superman, etc - my dc was Hercules. It didn't always go over well. So, once he hit K, we did have to give him some common currency. Don't worry. I won't kill dc to watch a cartoon or two so he will fit in a little better. On the movie front, dc has seen both Narnia, all Star Wars. Just likes those. [ Reply | More ]

Then you will have to wait a long time on the movies. But just make sure he isn't so out of touch he has problems socially with the other boys in k if you can. Do, mary poppins, chitty chitty bang bang, bed knobs and broomsticks - all those old fun ones, you could try the old willy wonka too [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. Those are good ideas. Funny thing is that he is not really into movies/tv. Only when he is sick and then he wants me to watch with him. Otherwise he would rather do something else. [ Reply | More ]

np: My K kid isn't seeing Star Wars for a while. He watches Noggin and other kid centered channels and has seen plenty of age appropriate movies but not violent movies like that. [ Reply | More ]

you sound just a little snotty and judgemental there mama. You could have said what you did for your child without putting down what other families are doing, don't you think? [ Reply | More ]

Pop... I think PG/PG13 movies are inappropriate for kids in Kindergarten. Especially when those movies are rated like that for violence. I mean the Star Wars movies are nothing but bombings, shootings and sword fights. Five year olds are not equipped to process that kind of stuff. (I don't think my post was snotty but I'll own the judgmental part.) [ Reply | More ]

np: just curious - what do you think is the point of movie ratings? i seriously do not get why any parent would take their 4 or 5 y.o. to a PG13 movie. what is the rush? it's not like the child can't watch it on dvd 5 yrs later when it's more age appropriate. i don't think the poster sounds snotty at all. if you're going to let a 5 y.o. watch a pg13 movie, are you going to let your 8 y.o. watch a rated R movie? and if not, what's the difference? I watched Star Wars as a kid. And all kinds of other stuff with violence (my dad once took me and my brother to see Rambo - my brother was 4). I was a well-adjusted smart kid who grew into a pacifist who opposes the death penalty even for terrorists. So despite my lack of smug, self-righteous parents I did ok. [ Reply | More ]

What research says a five year old who watches Star Wars is going to be harmed. Don't dance around it. I'm talking specifics here. [ Reply | More ]

Specifically Star Wars? Are you that simple-minded? Of course there is no research that says that if you watch Star Wars and Star Wars alone then you will be harmed. But there is plenty of research that shows that exposure to violent images at that age is linked to aggression and other maladaptive social problems. [ Reply | More ]

The research no doubt is confounded by many other factors. They aren't controlling for the many, many other parameters at play. [ Reply | More ]

You have to realize that there is a range for this, yours falls at one end, the kids who have seen Indie at 5 fall at the other. [ Reply | More ]

np: i agree about the range of things and the fact that you have to do what you're comfortable with. but as someone who closely moniters what my kids watch, it really annoys me to hear parents say one day that their kids are mature enough for harry potter movies or other PG13 movies and then question a few days later why dc is afraid to go to their rooms on their own or are suddenly afraid of the dark or waking with nightmares. It was actually a really nice thing for my dad and I to do together. I was just learning to read and he called me into the kitchen. He had the paper open to the movie page and pointed to the ad and said if I could read the title of the movie he'd take me to it. It was just the 2 of us. A loooong time ago but I remember it so clearly. [ Reply | More ]
