[ - ] Anyone looking for a FT live-out Nanny on UWS or UES? We’re leaving NYC and returning to Europe, and it is breaking our hearts to leave behind our brilliant nanny, Felicia. She has looked after our daughter for the last two years (since she was four months old) – Felicia is very caring, kind, patient, loving and extremely attentive to our child’s health, safety and development. Our daughter knew all of her letters by 22 months, and is ahead of her peers in language and general problem-solving; but most importantly she is an extremely happy, content child. Felicia is a Non-smoker and non-drinker. Comes from a very stable and nice extended family. Strong network of other nannies and children in our area (UWS). Our daughter has many friends, and has developed good social skills, thanks to Felicia. Keeps our apartment in immaculate condition and is very flexible when emergencies arise. Extremely reliable; she has never unexpectedly missed a day of work. Excellent references (including ourselves). If you’re interested, please email me at killyclug@gmail.com). She is looking to start a new position in early August. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My stepmom (of 20 years btw) has told my dad that she is "uncomfortable" going with "all" my friends and that he needs to come with her. I'm not sure why she isn't uncomfortable bringing an uninvited man to a baby shower! I don't care one way or another if my dad shows up but I'd prefer my stepmom just not come instead of causing drama. Ugh! 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

What is the LL/198 issue. I think this about ps321 in Brooklyn. All the parents give a lot of lip service to the lack of diversity but none of them bother to look for any. We live in Brooklyn for christsake. If you really wanted your child to have black friends, they would. [ Reply | More ]

To be fair, I think that it's also just that when push comes to shove, if you want to send your child to a strong public academic school the options just are what they are. You might be better off volunteering on the side to make schools in underserved communities better but sending your child to whatever school is in the best district you can afford. And, you don't have to go to a diverse elementary school to grow up to be an open-minded person. [ Reply | More ]

I'd like to add that we are the black family in the all white school. My child is thriving but I can't say that any parents were very warm to us. I felt like I had to work a lot harder to "make friends" within the parent social circle. White women gravitate to white women because that is what they know and that is what they want their children to know. [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry to hear this. I am black mom out in the burbs and I have to say that despite popular belief, people out here are FAR more open-minded. I have had no problem making friends at all and have rarely encountered the white women who gravitate toward other white women. I would be shocked to know that some of the women I know here shared some of the sentiments that I've seen expressed by the allegedly open-minded City dwellers on this board. [ Reply | More ]

I'm an LL parent and the disparity bothers me, we have friends at 198, but I do think the 2 schools are making progress at trying to work better together. Hopefully the new incoming principal (former Anderson assistant principal) will be able to work with 198 principal to continue positive change. I spoke with a 198 parent this morning at drop off and she said she's tempted to post signs (colored/white). It's not as bad as it used to be; many of the grants LL parents have gotten benefit both schools (like air conditioning, but regrettably the wiring gave out so now both schools are without A/C). There is a joint student council but as my 2nd grader says, that really only benefits the kids on the council. [ Reply | More ]

As a black mom it angers me that there is such a disparity --the whole upstairs/downstairs dynamic, but then as someone whose parents really pushed and encouraged academic achievement, I also hope it encourages people like the mom you spoke to to push to get her kid into a program like LL. I believe that given the right tools any of the black kids can get into these programs and that should be their parents' goals. [ Reply | More ]

The mom I spoke to is white, and is moving out of the city, though she says DD has had a very good experience for 3 years at 198 (they are moving for financial reasons). She liked that 198 was like a "rainbow," diverse in every sense, DD lucked out with good teachers, good classmates. Her DD was W/L at Hunter, didn't qualify for LL, but they've been happy at 198. I think one of the reasons this is true is because traditionally the black schools don't have the resources/respect that non-black schools have. Not saying that we don't want our kids in school with white kids just for the opportunity to associate with them, but honestly it's much harder to get through life in the US as a minority without encountering/interacting with whites than the other way around. So their desire is not based on mixing so much as getting their kids a better education. [ Reply | More ]

that's ridiculous. TAG isn't diverse -- it's nearly 100% black. chinatown schools aren't diverse either -- being nearly 100% asian (likely, chinese). anderson is quite diverse, at least my dd's class is. LL isn't diverse and really never has been, but it's a self-selecting group of applicants, mostly in white carnegie hill and yorkville neighborhoods. [ Reply | More ]

sorry, but the g&t programs in schools like ps 124 and 130 ARE diverse. and, those schools serve the chinatown community and their populations in the general ed programs are representative of that community. cannot, at least insofar as demographic is concerned, compare them to LL. [ Reply | More ]

probably the latter ultimately, but i would bet the former comes into play as well. i'm not judging it -- there are reasons beyond logistics and demographics that come into play, including how much money LL raises, which impacts the availability of resources like ass't teachers and gym equipment. in general, i could understand why parents want to send their kids to a wealthier (which often means whiter) school. ps 130 and 124 are undiscovered gems for many people outside of the community it represents. good scores, strong parental involvment and monied ptas. the logistics are problematic for those not in the community. a difficult commute from ues or midtown, which is the reason why neither school was an option for our family. too darn hard to get too! Nestiacs are the most insecure, desperate group...constantly trying to cover up for the nightmare that school was just a few years ago, when everyone wanted out of there.....I hear it's much better now. [ Reply | More ]

I'm confident it will. We are sending our 99 DC there in september for kindergarten. Toured it the other day. Impressed with the teachers and staff - friendly and highly qualified. Very positive and supportive environment. [ Reply | More ]

I really wanted to like it, bu i did not like Nest when I toured. Very strict and stiff environment and some of the classes we toured were so depressing. [ Reply | More ]

I'm one of the pro-NEST posters. I defend the school not out of some personality flaw as is suggested above, but because so many of the posts/posters who criticize NEST here either have no first hand knowledge of NEST or they have old knowledge. [ Reply | More ]

I thought it was a horror at the Fall open house, but dh visited for the tour after the results came in and really liked it. He said it was like night and day from the open house. Excited, if a little wary, that our ds will be going there. [ Reply | More ]

People at NEST including people who are quite happy with it say that it's strict and has a lot of rules and a lot of homework. Has any of that changed? [ Reply | More ]

If you search here there are plenty of discussions. My K son has homework but it is rarely an issue to get it done and if it is it is because he dicked around the first few nights and has to get it all done at the end of the week. (It is assigned weekly not night by night.) [ Reply | More ]

aww.poor thing. DD got first one at 6mo. Ped said nasal spray to help clear out nose. And Baby Vicks Vapor rub on chest and behind ears - really seemed to help her. And lots of fluids. I guess Db isn't drinking straight water or juice yet, but if BFing, BF as often as DB wants including at night till better. I also put a blanket under head of mattress to elevate it a bit. DB's cough wasnt that bad though, I think I'd call ped and ask advice on what to do for that. [ Reply | More ]

I'm an Aromatherapist who provides care to moms and babies. I suggest that you buy a small bottle of lavender oil and place 2 to 3 drops in a humdifier and keep in baby's room. That's something natural you can do on your own. Also, if you breast feeding, eliminate dairy and sugar as they are mucuos-building agents. If you are open, you and baby can consult with me.
