What is the LL/198 issue. I think this about ps321 in Brooklyn. All the parents give a lot of lip service to the lack of diversity but none of them bother to look for any. We live in Brooklyn for christsake. If you really wanted your child to have black friends, they would. [ Reply | More ]

ita, people "say" they want diversity...but at the end of the day, not for them. [ Reply | More ]

To be fair, I think that it's also just that when push comes to shove, if you want to send your child to a strong public academic school the options just are what they are. You might be better off volunteering on the side to make schools in underserved communities better but sending your child to whatever school is in the best district you can afford. And, you don't have to go to a diverse elementary school to grow up to be an open-minded person. [ Reply | More ]

I'd like to add that we are the black family in the all white school. My child is thriving but I can't say that any parents were very warm to us. I felt like I had to work a lot harder to "make friends" within the parent social circle. White women gravitate to white women because that is what they know and that is what they want their children to know. [ Reply | More ]

It's terrible how that is. Glad your child is thriving and that you are finding people who will embrace you as a person and not as a color. We need more of this. [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry to hear this. I am black mom out in the burbs and I have to say that despite popular belief, people out here are FAR more open-minded. I have had no problem making friends at all and have rarely encountered the white women who gravitate toward other white women. I would be shocked to know that some of the women I know here shared some of the sentiments that I've seen expressed by the allegedly open-minded City dwellers on this board. [ Reply | More ]

I'm an LL parent and the disparity bothers me, we have friends at 198, but I do think the 2 schools are making progress at trying to work better together. Hopefully the new incoming principal (former Anderson assistant principal) will be able to work with 198 principal to continue positive change. I spoke with a 198 parent this morning at drop off and she said she's tempted to post signs (colored/white). It's not as bad as it used to be; many of the grants LL parents have gotten benefit both schools (like air conditioning, but regrettably the wiring gave out so now both schools are without A/C). There is a joint student council but as my 2nd grader says, that really only benefits the kids on the council. [ Reply | More ]

As a black mom it angers me that there is such a disparity --the whole upstairs/downstairs dynamic, but then as someone whose parents really pushed and encouraged academic achievement, I also hope it encourages people like the mom you spoke to to push to get her kid into a program like LL. I believe that given the right tools any of the black kids can get into these programs and that should be their parents' goals. [ Reply | More ]

The mom I spoke to is white, and is moving out of the city, though she says DD has had a very good experience for 3 years at 198 (they are moving for financial reasons). She liked that 198 was like a "rainbow," diverse in every sense, DD lucked out with good teachers, good classmates. Her DD was W/L at Hunter, didn't qualify for LL, but they've been happy at 198. I live in all AA nabe and all my AA friends say they don't want their kids going to all AA schools. It seems like the white and AA ppl all want 50/50 or some kind of a breakdown close to that but you can't find a school like that other than Hunter at public schools - or extremely difficult to get in magnet schools. Manhattan Country School (MCS) is perhaps the only school that really approaches that level of true diversity, because they are a "private school with a public mission" and they have sliding scale tuition. [ Reply | More ]

I think one of the reasons this is true is because traditionally the black schools don't have the resources/respect that non-black schools have. Not saying that we don't want our kids in school with white kids just for the opportunity to associate with them, but honestly it's much harder to get through life in the US as a minority without encountering/interacting with whites than the other way around. So their desire is not based on mixing so much as getting their kids a better education. [ Reply | More ]

Anyone who says they want diversity but didn't rank TAG or the Chinatown Schools over Anderson/Nest or LL is a hypocriate. [ Reply | More ]

that's ridiculous. TAG isn't diverse -- it's nearly 100% black. chinatown schools aren't diverse either -- being nearly 100% asian (likely, chinese). anderson is quite diverse, at least my dd's class is. LL isn't diverse and really never has been, but it's a self-selecting group of applicants, mostly in white carnegie hill and yorkville neighborhoods. [ Reply | More ]

sorry, but the g&t programs in schools like ps 124 and 130 ARE diverse. and, those schools serve the chinatown community and their populations in the general ed programs are representative of that community. cannot, at least insofar as demographic is concerned, compare them to LL. [ Reply | More ]

okay, that's true. but as a practical matter, a family that lives in yorkville or carnegie hill who is presented with the opportunity to send their kid to a neighborhood school (which lab becomes) is not going to send their kid to chinatown. [ Reply | More ]

because of demographics or logisitics? would depend on the family. [ Reply | More ]

probably the latter ultimately, but i would bet the former comes into play as well. i'm not judging it -- there are reasons beyond logistics and demographics that come into play, including how much money LL raises, which impacts the availability of resources like ass't teachers and gym equipment. in general, i could understand why parents want to send their kids to a wealthier (which often means whiter) school. ps 130 and 124 are undiscovered gems for many people outside of the community it represents. good scores, strong parental involvment and monied ptas. the logistics are problematic for those not in the community. a difficult commute from ues or midtown, which is the reason why neither school was an option for our family. too darn hard to get too! np. right, but that's beside the point. diverse means a balance, and neither tag nor the chinatown schools have it. [ Reply | More ]

PS198 is actually a good school. Sure, it is more "diverse" and not a G&T but so what? Having two entrances is pretty normal for a building that houses separate schools, no? How does Anderson and PS9 share the building? The thing is 77 and 198 are two autonomous entities. [ Reply | More ]

anderson and ps9 kids enter through the same door. they share floors (some classrooms are anderson's and some are ps9's). they share a music room and art room. that said, they do not eat lunch together, and they do not have recess together. they are released from the yard together, and the D3 zoned anderson kids share school buses with the ps9 kids. As well as PS 9's non D3 kids (of which there are plenty through NCLB, sib policy and OTC registrations from years past giving an in to D5 students when there weren't enough D3 students for the general ed classes.) [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you. It is a good school. And having LL in the same building and all the attempts to get those two schools closer together does even do more good. It is just too black for many UBers. [ Reply | More ]
