So LL has the highest 4th grade math scores in the city, even though it uses D2 "terc" that so many hate, and at Nest, which uses Singapore that so many think is so much better, only 64% scored at grade level? Very interesting! [ Reply | More ]

A tiresome observation - whether a school is good is not all about the test scores. On the one hand, UBers are always banging on about how public schools do nothing but teach to the test from 3rd grade to 5th grade, on the other hand they are all besotted with how well particular schools do on these state tests! I agree that the ELA tests are so stupid, that they are not a sign of anything given a certain basic level of literacy, of how well kids take tests or have been prepped. But math is math. Why wouldn't math tests count as a show of ability of math? Other than those kids who freeze or who are very slow by nature? I think math tests count. LL is impressive since it includes the gen ed. (Does it really?) [ Reply | More ]

No, LL has a small group of Special Ed kids who, if you look at the scores for All Students, are included. But if you scroll down the DOE test pages, you'll come to a section marked General Education Students - that's where the G&T Lower Lab kids' scores are. [ Reply | More ]

this is my fear exactly. Something is definitely up because next year for K, nobody just go in and sign up at their zoned school. They are saying you'll apply at your district office and find out later where your dc will be assigned - this way people will think twice about moving to a "good" zone since you won't know for sure that moving to neighborhood X will guarantee your dc a spot in school Y. This is what we think is happening too. It makes it impossible to plan anything in our lives (we own in a "good" zone, our jobs are close and everything was planned to work great-with just signing dc up for the school which is 4 blocks away.) Now, who knows? We're not confident dc will test well, and we wouldn't want G&T anyway. We are the sane people, and they are making us crazy. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, that makes me shudder. To indulge a 5 year old girl to the degree that you "make her dreams come true" is so disturbing. And you will always be able to find someone with more grotesque and distorted values so that is cold comfort. [ Reply | More ]

This was the first (and last) year I did a bigger party for ds. We had always had about 4 kids at the apartment (very small), and he wanted to invite more of his friends. If he had a warm weather birthday, I would have just done the park and paid for food and a permit, but he's a Nov. boy, so rock-bottom, I paid for 2hr rental for a building at the park, invited about 15 of his friends with their parents and a few family members. There was nothing materialistic about this party, believe me, and it still ended up costing, all told, almost $400. [ Reply | More ]

exactly. in the year dd went to the onsite at hunter, there were easily twice as many girls than boys. same thing when dd did her anderson onsite (back when they used a SB cutoff and had an onsite). hunter balances for gender and anderson used to, but the SB yielded similar results as the olsat does. According to DOE numbers, which are 2 years old, some NEST classes are even gender-wise, others aren't. The 2005-06 3rd grade class was 37 girls, 16 boys. The 7th grade class was 58 girls, 31 boys; 8th grade was 29 girls, 12 boys. The 4th & 6th grades are more even. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My Dad is 65 yrs old, now that he has medicaid he has been going to a bunch of Doctors for a series of different issues. Here's the thing, he has a VERY limited English vocabulary and a 4th grade education from another country. He cannot comprehend about 90% of what any doctor tells him. He is an old school, macho man who is not telling me or my mother what is going on. He needs my help and I am more than willing to help.
