i think nest is equal boys vs. girls. you know studies have proved that "gifted" girls fall off the spectrum when they hit about 12-15 yrs. old due to their obsession with boys and make-up, clothes etc... [ Reply | More ]

np - I think a lot of Stuy is self-selecting. Many girls I know who could get into Stuy opt for other schools because of the sci/math emphasis. [ Reply | More ]

maybe, but by hs it all evens out anyway. girls are more advanced at young age, not smarter. [ Reply | More ]

If girls were really smarter, you moms would be able to figure out that there must be something wrong with a test that says twice as many 4 year old girls as boys are "highly gifted." [ Reply | More ]

all the tests say the same thing unfortunately. hunter 2nd round was filled with way more girls based on SB. luckily our ds is advanced among boys and girls. [ Reply | More ]

exactly. in the year dd went to the onsite at hunter, there were easily twice as many girls than boys. same thing when dd did her anderson onsite (back when they used a SB cutoff and had an onsite). hunter balances for gender and anderson used to, but the SB yielded similar results as the olsat does. Which is why we are so excited about the prospect of NEST, and the fact that they separate out the sexes for a lot of the classes during those years. [ Reply | More ]

According to DOE numbers, which are 2 years old, some NEST classes are even gender-wise, others aren't. The 2005-06 3rd grade class was 37 girls, 16 boys. The 7th grade class was 58 girls, 31 boys; 8th grade was 29 girls, 12 boys. The 4th & 6th grades are more even. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the Anderson K class now is 30 girls 20 boys so it's not all that different. Can't blame that on the new process this year.... [ Reply | More ]

np. Last year was strictly by score, no gender balance attempted. [ Reply | More ]

Not true for A. They were allowed to hold on-sites last year. The district G&Ts were strictly by score. Not sure about Nest. [ Reply | More ]

They had an onsite, but the DOE held them to a strict rubric for "scoring" the dc and gender wasn't supposed to be taken into account. [ Reply | More ]

that's right. This year and last year not allowed to take top 25 boys and 25 girls. Just top 50. Although last year, they said the numbers were almost even but more boys declined to sent to private schools. I think I heard yesterday that most of the declines for this year were also boys. Thats a shame. That means all their parents believed the propoganda put out there. All the boys that I know of in the school love it there. [ Reply | More ]
