[ - ] Does anyone have parents who drink everyday. I hate talking to my mom on the phone some nights when I know she's been drinking. It's painful. Tonight I got off the phone with her quickly and made some excuse and she sent me a very hurt upset email. We've had problems before about her behavior with others when she drinks and she always thinks I am harping on her and judging her. She told me in this email that she wasn't drinking tonight and that no one else judges her and that I drink so how can I judge her. How do I handle this. I love my Mom and we have a usually great relationship but the drinking and she also takes blood pressure medicine is pushing me away. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm sorry, I don't have any good advice for you, but I can certainly relate. My father was a "high functioning" alcoholic till the day he died (at 76); nothing could persuade him to give up his nightly vodka. My mom was also an alcoholic but not high functioning like my dad (they were divorced); fortunately she finally got sober when I was 14, but it profoundly affected our relationship. I know how hard it is, I'm sorry. [ Reply | More ]

DH thinks his parents are functioning alcoholics. They're 71 and 73 and they drink every night - maybe one night off a week. Usually FIL has a couple scotches and then maybe wine with dinner. MIL has white wine, sometime up to a whole bottle herself. [ Reply | More ]

OP: My mom and dad both drink everyday but my dad doesn't change his behavior at all. He holds it well. But he covers for her and gets upset with me and say she doesn't have a problem and to stop upsetting her. She used to drink around the kids but I said no more of that. That hurt her but what else can I do. She is in complete denial and thinks I am harping and judgemental and making stuff up. I don't want her putting herself in an early grave with this. That's how my DH feels about his parents. How much do your parents drink? And how old are they? DH's parents seem ok with the drinking, they handles themselves pretty well, are always fine the next day. Sometimes I wonder if they're really alcoholics, but it's true, it's a lot, almost every night. It's not good. [ Reply | More ]

OP: my parents are usually fine the next day but I have conversations with my mom she doesn't remember, she slurs her words and denies it. I can't listen to her and just want to slam down the phone when I hear her. My Aunt (her sister is an alcoholic) and I have confronted my mom many times and talked up the health issues and that we love her and want her around and she gets very hurt and defensive saying she's not her sister. She can only have 2-4 glasses of wine at night and slur because she on medication for blood pressure etc as well. I am so tired of it but she's a good mom and grandmother. I don't know what to do but ignore it. She's not going to change. [ Reply | More ]

This is how my dad grew up -- every night, a shaker of martinis, then wine with dinner, then after dinner sherry -- very waspy Bronxville types -- but oddly, I didn't see my grandparents drink much once they retired and moved to cape cod. I'm sure it didn't enhance my dad's health in his later years. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not sure, but I really don't think that a kid would say this stuff without being told it. I don't agree that abuse is the cause. My 6 yo says similar things when he feels remorseful. He is in therapy (no abuse history) and the psychiatrist attributes it partly to his not having a "theory of mind" which can be part of a social learning disability or autistic spectrum disorder. My DS said similar things at the same age. Very alarming, for sure. I was in therapy, so I talked it through w/ my therapist. We tried a lot of positive reinforcement, spoke privately w/ his teachers, and just tried to be aware of it as much as possible. He is also extremely dramatic and sensitive, too. I considered therapy, and would definitely have taken him if it hadn't resolved over the last couple of years. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

NEST and Anderson PTA execs worked very cooperatively helping one another through this year. Any animosity is only on UB and probably not from parents at either school. But I don't agree that the DOE should interfere in either school's model or mission. They should not be cookie cutters of one another. Each should have its own methods and practices and culture so parents have a choice that's meaningful rather than just location and size. [ Reply | More ]

who cares what you assume? It's just mean you are judgmental, but what does this have to do with op's question? [ Reply | More ]

I hate ambien. Nothing worse than ambien-amnesia. I got a script for sonata, which I love. [ Reply | More ]

4 hours. You can take a second one if you wake up in the middle of the night and don't have to be up for another 4 hours. [ Reply | More ]

take 1/2 an ambien -- 10mg is too much if you've not used to it. 1/3 to 1/2 would get me to sleep well without interruption for 6 hours. [ Reply | More ]

Take the ambien and go straight to bed within seconds...or you'll start baking cakes or calling people in the middle of the night and not remebering what you said. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What should I do? DH has hated his job for 10 years. Wants to quit and start a new career. Says he has to quit before he can begin to look. He's smart, talented, driven. He can do freelance jobs in the meantime. Would you let him quit? It's really scary to me but I feel like he deserves to be happy in a career and for some reason (well, time) he can't move on without quitting current job. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

if he really hates his job, then he needs to get out. whatever it takes. hopefully you have a nice cushion and $$ isn't tight or you can support you both. [ Reply | More ]

I've never understood quitting before you have a job. I think you are always better job hunting from a position of strength. [ Reply | More ]
