[ - ] OK, someone diagnose me. The left side of my face is freaking out. Started with sharp pulsing pain near my temple, which eventually seemed to migrate to my ear, then down my jaw an neck. Now I seem to have conjunctivitis in my left eye, and what I would guess are hives over my left eyebrow. I made an appt with an ENT doc when the pain in my temple went to my ear, figuring it was some kind of sinus thing, but now.... I don't have a regular doc, so if someone in NYC (Manhattan) can recommend a good internist or gen prac who accepts bc/bs, I'd be most grateful! 34 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

, or Tic Douloureux, (also known as prosopalgia) is a neuropathic disorder of the trigeminal nerve that causes episodes of intense pain in the eyes, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, and jaw.[1] It is estimated that 1 in 15,000 people suffer from trigeminal neuralgia, although those numbers may be significantly higher due to frequent misdiagnosis. TN usually develops after the age of 40, although there have been cases with patients being as young as three years of age [2]. The condition can bring about stabbing, mind-numbing, electric shock-like pain from just a light wind or a finger's glance of the cheek. Believed to be among the most severe types of pain known to humanity, the most common forms of TN affect 1 in 15,000 to 20,000, but 1 in 5,000 are thought to suffer from some type of facial pain. [ - ] Four years ago, around 95% of Anderson kids in the fourth grade got 4's on the math test. Three years ago, it was 91%. Last year, it was 65%. This has been asked about at PTA meetings, but there is no clear answer. The kids are very smart, so I think the problem is that they are confused by the new Everyday Math curriculum which does not do a good job on basics such as like multiplying, word problems, or remembering to check your work. I love the school and dc is prety happy here but yes, there is some kind of problem, to be honest. I do Singapore at home with dc and dc does great but most parents are not in a position to do that. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My dc's school does everyday math and dc scored an 800 on the 4th grade math test. maybe it's the acceleration that confuses them. they are being taught 5th grade math but being tested on 4th grade? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, they are being taught a year ahead of the year they are being tested on. But math builds on itself, so I don't know if that explains it. And they were accelerated a year when they were all getting 4's. No one in the school thinks the kids have changed. So it's a mystery. Since school gets top top ratings by DOE, no one seems to care. anyway [ Reply | More ]

I was fortunate to grow up in the South Pacific doing what we now call "Singapore Math" and I was underwhelmed by US Math textbooks when I came here. I think that there are many reasons why US trails the world in Math. Curriculm does make a difference. The TIMMS study http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trends_in_international_mathematics_and_science_study compares Math and Science achievement across the globe. Its clear that curriculum makes a sifference. Thats why our two DCs are at NEST+m. I'm a math geek and the EST approach is better than the default approach. [ Reply | More ]

Part of the equation is that the school no longers spends more than a few weeks devoting class time to prep with a workbook tailored to preparing for the test. Four years ago they spent 8-12 weeks on prep, at the expense of other learning - mostly because those 4th grade scores were the ticket to middle school admissions. Now that Anderson has its own middle school, these state tests don't mean much to its students or teachers, who use other assessments to see if kids need help in areas of their learning. I prefer it this way. [ Reply | More ]

I will not. And I am not avoinding. It's complicated beyond UB's capabilities (and mine at the moment I guess) Life is precious and it's not fair and we arent going to be able to make it so. We are also not going to be able to ration healthcare in any way that makes sense - ever. [ Reply | More ]

Then you advocate the death of children, through passive denial of care/assistance to extend the life of the elderly. Nice. Well, that is certainly your prerogative, I will have to agree to disagree with you on that one. [ Reply | More ]

I will say that I have a hard time understanding the specifics. I had a son who died and am lucky enough to have a DD now after being told it would nto happen. I do however understand that loss is loss and grief is grief. Try to be happy about what you do have. It makes life better. I could wallow in my grief about my son - and believe me - I have. Or I can feel so lucky to have my DD. It's my choice. I choose to be happy. I hope you will come around to that point someday [ Reply | More ]
