OK... Why has neither candidate proposed a huge initiative to reinvigorate the city of Detroit with a push to create electronic / new fuel tech cars that will help us be on the cutting edge of new technology once again, extract us from the oil equation in this respect, AND put Americans back to work ? good one. I think tax cuts are the way to go here. Give tax incentives to companies that hire americans, move to depressed areas and work on alternative fuels [ Reply | More ]

the gov't really messes things up more often than not. I like a hands off approach to most things. Let the free market work. Prices are high. People will come up with something. As they say - necessity is a mother [ Reply | More ]

IDA. All the talk about excessive profits is ridiculous. Oil companies are publicly owned. WHo gets the profits? Look at your 401K. I'll bet you own stock in Exxon etc. The right actually wants more freedom - well they used to anyway. That's why I'm a libertarian and not a republican anymore. OP ok - I can't even begin to argue against that one! LOL! And I'm a conservative! I don't see the problem. I think Britannt Spears etc have done more to destroy marriage than all the gay people inthe world [ Reply | More ]

This one is basic math; gay marriage equals payouts, retirement and insurance benefits. The friends of current ruling administration are big insurance and finance conglomerates. The right wing, fundamental Christian population are only too happy to oblige by signing upwith their ignorant protesting rants. It's a beautiful setup! [ Reply | More ]

wow i had never thought ot that. thanks. it is liek the whoel change in bankruptcy laws. it is not abotu poeple takign financial responsibiulity, it is abotu credit card companies scamming mor epoeple out of their money. credit card offers are sent to every tom dick and harry including teenage college students, people on public assistance or other federal aid, unemployed etc. and then when these people default credit card companies still want their money, but when bear stearns screws up, the feds help the company get bought out! I can't handle having a war with Iran unless drop dead necessary (like we know that they are going to bomb us or Israel next week). If we go in, they will have to institute a draft, and it will become a very bad situation. Therefore I am not voting for McCain, because he really is in favor of going in. [ Reply | More ]

I threw in Israel b/c it is our ally closest to Iran, so I figure if they aren't capable of bombing us, they will bomb Israel. Obviously, we found out that they are going to bomb Japan, England, etc. I would say the same thing.... [ Reply | More ]

a draft is a horrible idea. The armed forces should be staffed by people who want to be tehere. You can't have a good defense comprised of people who are pacifists and wimps [ Reply | More ]

yes but the thinking was different then. People were gung ho for war. Now - since Vietnam and the beginning of media reporting from the front, people have diff attitudes. [ Reply | More ]

well I would argue that we shuld not be going to war unless the country is - as you say "gung ho". When the population is behind a military undertaking than it should be initiated. [ Reply | More ]

do you agree that it is possible that a president (not even the current one necesarily) knows things we, as the general public, do not? Would you agree that perhaps it could be in our country's intrest to go to war even if the population is agianst it? I would also posit that some people have a kind of 60's hangover where they think that any war ever is bad and would protest in the streets against any war even if we were attacked. I think popular support is important, but not the only thing [ Reply | More ]

Has there been a war that has been this way ? can you give me an example or is this just a hypothetical ? Vietnam, bad choice and no information secret or otherwise that made it right. Iraq, no information that makes it seem to have been such. I'd like an example. [ Reply | More ]

can't give an example. Been out of history class for too many years. Just saying hypothetically, it's possible. I think people mighth have been more naive for the WWs, but WW2 was basically a good thing in the end even though so many people died. War is never good. But soemtimes it is necessary [ Reply | More ]

I don't think you should require a history class to remember modern wars. You just need to think about your statement and see if it *really* makes sense... [ Reply | More ]

now that is just ignorant. Everyone knows it;s the environmentalists who are causing high gas prices by restricting drilling in Alaksa and coast of Florida [ Reply | More ]

no, don't throw the ignorant card here. the amount of oil available off Florida and Alaska is not even close to the amount needed to help with the world's current oil pressures and our pressures at home. That is inaccurate and not based in fact. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think so. I'm not sure they even know how myuch is out there. Besides, have you heard that China is working with Cuba to drill in the gulf of mexico? Weird eh? The environmentalists are keeping us from doing it but have no power over them. They will come and take the oil that we could have and then charge us triple what is should cost if we let the free market work. Get the gov't out of the way [ Reply | More ]

Life is precious--in particular, the lives of the young, such as those in poor countries, that are impacted or even lost because Western society spends so much money extending the unproductive life of the elderly, including those who cannot pay for it themselves [ Reply | More ]

ALL life is precious and we should do what we can to help all people have a good shot at a good life. That does not mean sacrificing some for others. However, I see your point. Life will never be fair but we can work to make it more so without killing off old indigent citizens [ Reply | More ]

As medical science advances, it will become theoretically possible to extend life further and further by more and more expensive means, if euthanasia is not employed--either directly or implicitly by denial of care. How specifically would you avoid this [ Reply | More ]

wow. Ok this is getting kind of heavy for UB ;-) I tend to want to rely on the free market and people's good sense. There will always be inequities in life. You can't avoid that. There will always be some old fart who should just die and won't and some little kid who could use the kidney. It's life. It's not fair. I think the best we can do is to let the free market advance technology and moral thinkers express their various views. Not sure how specific I can get on something so theoretical [ Reply | More ]

I will not. And I am not avoinding. It's complicated beyond UB's capabilities (and mine at the moment I guess) Life is precious and it's not fair and we arent going to be able to make it so. We are also not going to be able to ration healthcare in any way that makes sense - ever. [ Reply | More ]

Then you advocate the death of children, through passive denial of care/assistance to extend the life of the elderly. Nice. Well, that is certainly your prerogative, I will have to agree to disagree with you on that one. [ Reply | More ]
