Look for areas with good zoned Gen Eds to avoid the craziness - UWS (87, 199, 9 (on the rise), UES (290, 6), Tribeca (234). Others will chime in. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't move to the village unless you liked both 41 and 3 since you could be assigned to either [ Reply | More ]

and it's sure to be rezoned. otoh, there will be two brand-new schools in the area in the next five years, which will alleviate a lot of the crowdeing, have nice facilities, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Not Tribeca, PS 234 is a good school, but it had a wait list for ZONED kids for K this year!! Too many K children, not enough seats. [ Reply | More ]

Ugh. Many of the "good" schools are so overcrowded that there is talk of re-zoning. I live in one of the "good" zones mentioned, and I'm not at all confident that my kid will be able to go to our zoned school 2 years from now. I am also desperately trying to avoid the craziness, but this place makes even sane people nuts. [ Reply | More ]

this is my fear exactly. Something is definitely up because next year for K, nobody just go in and sign up at their zoned school. They are saying you'll apply at your district office and find out later where your dc will be assigned - this way people will think twice about moving to a "good" zone since you won't know for sure that moving to neighborhood X will guarantee your dc a spot in school Y. This is what we think is happening too. It makes it impossible to plan anything in our lives (we own in a "good" zone, our jobs are close and everything was planned to work great-with just signing dc up for the school which is 4 blocks away.) Now, who knows? We're not confident dc will test well, and we wouldn't want G&T anyway. We are the sane people, and they are making us crazy. [ Reply | More ]

OP: so what is the problem?? (rhetoric question) I'm venting, but I don't get why (public) education is of such low importance to those who are supposed to be working for the people. why can't they put money into the system? it's been said better than this, but I'm sick of the rhetoric that all but ignores access to affordable decent education and health care. (told you I was venting.) [ Reply | More ]

Riverdale is low stress and has good schools. Not Manhattan though but was the best compromise for us. DH and I wanted something mellower. [ Reply | More ]

I thought Riverdale had only 1 good school. Plus you're still subject to the arbitrariness/incompetence of the DOE. [ Reply | More ]

What are the private options in Forest hills? I think there is only one private option in all of queens [ Reply | More ]

Don't know of non-religious privates in Forest Hills. A good parochial and also a few Jewish schools. The publics are all strong, especially 196 [ Reply | More ]
