[ - ] Anyone with any insight on Dwight? I don't want to hear about its reputation from 30 years ago (I know what that is) but I'd love to hear about it's current student body, curriculum, philosophy and what kind of dc it would be a good fit for. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The rep on Dwight has not have changed, it seems. They give international degrees, so it's mroe in demand by foreigners. They also have a special program in the school for the kids with certain issues (not sure which but learning disability, I think). [ Reply | More ]

Those are facts (albeit ones that I know from the brochure) and "rep hasn't changed" is sort of meaningless since I didn't ask about its rep, I asked for insight about the curriculum, philosophy etc. [ Reply | More ]

I know a teacher and counselor at Dwight. They says that things are improving and they are really trying to shed the old reputation (everyone knows the initials). That said neither is really impressed with where the school is today, but are hopeful about where it is going. According to one UNIS, also an IB school, is far better. [ Reply | More ]

thanks. i'm trying to find a less competetive to get into private to round out my list and from the website it looked interesting and i wondered if much like other schools that in the 80s were not that great, it had improved and had a certain appeal. sounds like not yet really. [ Reply | More ]

I went to TT co-ed in the 80s so I can only say what we all thought of it back then. I'm sure it's a decent school with some good qualities but Dwight had the reputation as the place people end up as a last resort when rejected everywhere else. Also, it was known in the past as the place kids went to after being kicked out of the better private schools in the city. You have to decide if you feel comfortable there, you think it's a right fit for your child and you can stand the stigma that goes along with telling others that your child goes there. Rightly or wrongly, that's the reality -- when people hear Dwight there's a negative connotation to it and you'll have to decide whether, honestly, this will matter to you and whether the school is worth the price tag (monetarily and otherwise) compared to other options you may have. I think for 2 dc, $600/wk is the minimum so at a 40 hr wk that would be $15/hr, but for 50-55 hrs, it's not necessarily going up to $750-825, so therefore the hourly might be lower. Also, it depends on how long nanny has been with you, what previous family was paying her, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Op: first off, not complaining for having to pay for long hours, just confused b/c everyone i know pays around $600-$700/wk for nannies and no one I know gets home before 6:30, so therefore....and yes, both dh & I are very well compensated for what we do; just trying to plan for dd when she arrives in the fall [ Reply | More ]

see above. i think that's about right. those who are at 40 hours and/or one is in school and/or have newer nanny pay closer to 600 and those with twins, long hours, etc. pay 700 or a a bit more (say if they have twins and long hours and a very experienced nanny) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Following the "slow students should be segregated" thread: NYT article today about the vocational track. "Forget the old-fashioned “vocational ed” classes that sent students on a decidedly noncollege track. Over the last quarter-century, a new kind of high school program known as a career academy has proliferated, especially in low-income districts, that combines job placement, college preparation and classes beyond the vocational trades, from accounting to health care. Now, a long-term and rigorous evaluation of nine career academies across the country, to be released in Washington on Friday, has found that eight years after graduation, participants had significantly higher employment and earnings than similar students in a control group." http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/26/education/26careers.html?_r=1&ref=education&oref=slogin 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I thought drama/theater was there, too, but can't remember that one. Computer lab and science room were very impressive. Oh, ice skating also. Library was far better. Hunter elem school PTA raised $500k and Hunter HS raised $1MM or so. They don't have to pay for building or teachers (every class has 2 teachers), so every cent they raise goes to extras. However, no sunlight. [ Reply | More ]

They are comparable: most of these are electives or taught as part of art or social studies units at Anderson, too (including chess, TADA, Salvadori architecture, Irish step dance, law, philosophy, TADA musical theater, printmaking/linotype, cooking, forensic science, Lucy Moses music/movement, more) And certainly available in extensive after school program (Latin, German, guitar instruction, fencing, TaeKwonDo, inline skating, woodworking, theater, more). Instruments at Anderson start in 4th grade - flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, alto sax, violin/viola, cello, percussion, keyboards are I think, most of the offerings. No swimming. (But I thought Hunter swim was only for 8th grade and it's 1x/wk at the college for half a year). Anderson just got huge tech grant and will have laptop carts for every teacher to use whenever they want, smartboards in every room, too. Library comparable. (Hunter's library had average aged book moved from 1957 to 1970-something recently.) Hunter just sent out urgent letter that they lost almost $1MM in funding (90% cut in city funding) so next year they are in terrible shape and will not be able to afford lots of extras unless parents pony up double because all $$$ will be filtered to HS where its reputation is key to whole school surviving. neither do I, and I took the SATs less than 10 years ago... funny how these things matter so little once you're in college. I know what I got on one test because I got 10 points below a perfect score, but other than that I have no recollection! [ Reply | More ]

Because, your score is somewhere from 0-1600. It's not hard to rememebr if you are in the 1300s 1400s 1500s etc. And if you know the one, as you say you do.., it should be ALL the easier for you to remember the total..I'm not saying its important anymore, I'm just saying if you flex your brain, you will remember.. I'm pretty sure it was in the high 1400s but don't recall the exact score. And the score I do remember (if you read my post) was for SATIIs which is different (not a cumulative score). [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] my broker was going to have a dinner in honor of his b-day and said no kids. His youngest kid is 22 but his brothers & sister have kids ranging from 1 month - 16 years old by the time of this party. At first I thought that's fine - its dinner, a night out, drinks - okay; now he's changed it to a brunch and I think, still wants no kids. I can't decide if this is ok... For the rest of us weekend days is family time - nevermind how do you get a sitter for a Sunday daytime? Thoughts? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
