Hmm... I pay my nanny (who works for me 20 hours a week) $15/hr. My cleaning lady comes every 2 weeks and works for 4 hours and I pay $80. my apartment is so clean I wouldn't have to clean it again until she comes back (I do), but it is absolutely worth it. Either you can pay someone $10/hr and have them work 8 hours, or pay more and get a harder and better worker. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry you're the ridiculous one for assuming all of this. My nanny works with me (I work at home) to help take care of my child part time after school and occasional evenings. Her job is pretty easy (she is a student and goes to school in the mornings and some afternoons) and she and I both value my dc very much. However, to equate the jobs on your bases is really ridiculous. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think she would be interested in cleaning my apartment. She's happy to help with things, but it isn't her job and I would never ask it of her. She knows my cleaning lady well, and knows what I pay her because occasionally when I am not home I have the nanny pay her. I don't understand why you have such a problem with this. The op's post about $10/hr is ridiculously low for a good cleaning person [ Reply | More ]

Just because some of us are hostages to the public system (can't afford to opt out into private) doesn't mean we LIKE the way it is structured. It's not inconsistent at all. We're just doing the best we can, within a system that has priorities that we might not agree with. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.26.08, 01:30 PM Flag

But if the testing in that system is BS, why tout the test scores at all? It may even be a sign the school pays too much attention to test prep. [ Reply | More ]

There are a number of different --- and all valid --- conclusions one can reach from test scores. [ Reply | More ]

Before blanket criticism, please look at the tests. I agree that kids are over tested and the financial ties in NCLB create real problems, but if you look at the actual tests you will find they cover all the basic skills we want our kids to learn. "Teaching to the test" mostly means teaching all those things we expect our kids to learn. Among other things testing helps make sure that the kids are getting it and allows Ed departments to see what is going on in the schools. What if you had decided a curriculum that you wanted to make sure every 3rd grader learned - what better way is there than to test on that curriculum? You can download all of these tests to see them for yourself. [ Reply | More ]
