Russian is a popular choice because about half the words in Russian have roots in English, French, or German. It's kind of a foreign language and "world language overview" in one class. [ Reply | More ]

You don't attain fluency in 3 years (or two if they started n 7th grade). My HS child took four years of Spanish at Hunter, got straight A's and can only muster a few sentences at Spanish-speaking resorts. Your expectations for instructions in a non-immersion class are unrealistic. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson kids take Spanish from K-5. Most learn very little. Then they start from scratch - with new admitees - in sixth grade. There have been many parent complaints and thank goodness the principal seems to be listening. I can't imagine they'd do Russian. Latin or Mandarin or French seem the most likely. [ Reply | More ]

I took 6 years of foreign language in MS/HS and didn't achieve fluency in a top NYC private school and neither did any of my classmates. If you want fluency, live abroad or take an immersion Berlitz course. In school language classes you learn vocabulary, grammer, lots and lots of congujating (which doesn't kick into fluency unless you live in a non-English speaking country and are forced to speak that language you studied every day or starve), and how to write essays of little importance - unless you have unusual motivation to use the language all the time in the USA. It depends on the school. Some of them teach reading formally in K and others don't. Ours doesn't, and there's not much in-depth evaluation of dc's reading skills until near the end of the K year and the very beginning of 1st grade. Even so, the teachers are aware of which dc can read and their general level. I know other TTs do explicit reading instruction in K, so I imagine they must evaluate the dc in September. Would you mind saying which school? I don't think it's all that common. They all group dc by ability, and there's typically enough of a range within the grade that dc on both ends of the curve can be accommodated. Our older dc was reading at the 5th-6th grade level by the start of 1st when they formed reading groups and it wasn't an issue. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if that's what they meant - grouping kids by level at K and allowing dc to be grouped with the higher level one? It's a coed. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.26.08, 06:05 PM Flag
»
That sounds more likely, but then again I know there are some schools that send dc to higher grades for specific classes if the dc is very advanced in that subject. I believe Hunter will do this for math, for instance. So it's not unheard of. But I wouldn't have been happy if my 6 yo had been with 10 yos for language arts. The ability level might have been a match but the socioemotional fit would have been way off. [ Reply | More ]

we are at non-tt private, but I will answer your question, anyway. (Both of my dcs were reading in K). During the first several months of the year during literacy, there are no formal evaluations as the dcs work in small groups. In december, the reading specailists and teachers will work more closely witht he small groups and make evaluations. Dc's groups are then formed based on skills (ie.....kids that a re great a phonics, kids that sight read, but aren't good at phonics, kids working on letter sounds). The groups are fluid for the rest of the year as strengths and weaknesses change and become more evident. [ Reply | More ]

a few years ago they tried placing one or two kids up a grade or two and it was a social disaster.
