I think Anderson needs to add to the foreign language offerings. Spanish is just not sufficient for MSers. Do they even have latin? what about french or something else? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Everyone in NYC speaks Spanish. They should offer Russian or Mandarin. [ Reply | More ]

Principal Culot said at Orientation on Wednesday that they are looking into adding another language for Sept. They just need to find a quallified teacher. He did not say which language though. [ Reply | More ]

please let it be something other than mandarin or Russian. Whatever happened to french and german? or what about latin? i do not see my dc learning mandarin in any meaningful way, and russian is useless. [ Reply | More ]

Russian is a popular choice because about half the words in Russian have roots in English, French, or German. It's kind of a foreign language and "world language overview" in one class. [ Reply | More ]

please tell me it won't be that! I will have to sign up my dc for foreign language outside of the school. not another enrichment class, please! [ Reply | More ]

And I like the way they have the 6th graders take all 3 languages, then decide which to take for 7th & 8th grades. [ Reply | More ]

Who says they're considering Russian? Only a UB poster mentioned Russian. [ Reply | More ]

I attended public school (in a suburb of Boston) and Russian was the most popular foreign language taught. Not a new trend in education at all! [ Reply | More ]

But other than Latin at Delta, the teaching in Spanish and French is sooooo awful. Another example of "looks good on paper." [ Reply | More ]

They would do better just to improve the Spanish program. Kids hardly learn anything as it stands now. [ Reply | More ]

None of the kids come out fluent in Spanish or even close unless they have exposure to it ourside of the school. [ Reply | More ]

You don't attain fluency in 3 years (or two if they started n 7th grade). My HS child took four years of Spanish at Hunter, got straight A's and can only muster a few sentences at Spanish-speaking resorts. Your expectations for instructions in a non-immersion class are unrealistic. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson kids take Spanish from K-5. Most learn very little. Then they start from scratch - with new admitees - in sixth grade. There have been many parent complaints and thank goodness the principal seems to be listening. I can't imagine they'd do Russian. Latin or Mandarin or French seem the most likely. [ Reply | More ]

I took 6 years of foreign language in MS/HS and didn't achieve fluency in a top NYC private school and neither did any of my classmates. If you want fluency, live abroad or take an immersion Berlitz course. In school language classes you learn vocabulary, grammer, lots and lots of congujating (which doesn't kick into fluency unless you live in a non-English speaking country and are forced to speak that language you studied every day or starve), and how to write essays of little importance - unless you have unusual motivation to use the language all the time in the USA.
