I keep on seeing $15/hr as the rate for nannies in Manhattan. So you're telling me for a full time gig from 8pm to 7pm, you're paying your nannies $800+/ week???? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

if that's the math. I usually only have my nanny for about 35 hrs/wk, but yes, we pay $15/hr. [ Reply | More ]

$15/hour for multiple children, not typically one child. [ Reply | More ]

There's a big difference betw a 40 hr FT gig and a 55 hr FT gig. You obviously pay more for 55 hr. That being said, most people I know pay $12-13/hr for one child. $15/hr for two. [ Reply | More ]

I have a part-time nanny at that amount, usually around $20/week. Also keep in mind that for many this is before taxes. [ Reply | More ]

That's a LONG week of work. You better be prepared to pay for that. [ Reply | More ]

not really ridiculous, just ridiculous to be gone that long AND complain that you have to pay real money for the coverage [ Reply | More ]

np: i agree. If you're working those hrs, hopefully you're pulling in serious $ so that paying a nanny is not such a big deal [ Reply | More ]

yes. At that point a nanny is basically another family member and needs serious compensation. But still, not everyone working those hours makes $$$ (us, for example, DH is a biglaw assoc and works worse hours and is paid fine, but not huge amounts) [ Reply | More ]

Ah. I post here often about this - for a little dose o' reality. My DH is 12 years out, still an assoc. (still paying off loans!) and NOT biglaw. Works 80 hrs a week and makes 100k. [ Reply | More ]

typically at firms if you're not made partner or counsel by 10th year you're basically told to find a new job and work inhouse [ Reply | More ]

If he can't make partner and is a "12 yr associate" he should just quit and go corporate. Business affairs VPs make 2x -3x that. [ Reply | More ]

I used to work 80+ hours a week and made 160k (not bad I know but not rich). Now I make slightly less but I still work over 50 hours a week. [ Reply | More ]

has he explored other options? I used to work 60hrs+/wk as a banker but made close to $700K. I now work for a pharma company, work probably 35hrs/wk (with one day from home), and make $180k. There are definitely jobs out there with better math.... [ Reply | More ]

Well, we are living on my salary (arts, $35K) and his (biglaw assoc, 4th year, 210K) so taking a huge paycut isn't possible atm [ Reply | More ]

ITA - lots of people work those hours and don't make hundreds of thousands. In NYC it is pretty common. [ Reply | More ]

I think for 2 dc, $600/wk is the minimum so at a 40 hr wk that would be $15/hr, but for 50-55 hrs, it's not necessarily going up to $750-825, so therefore the hourly might be lower. Also, it depends on how long nanny has been with you, what previous family was paying her, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Op: first off, not complaining for having to pay for long hours, just confused b/c everyone i know pays around $600-$700/wk for nannies and no one I know gets home before 6:30, so therefore....and yes, both dh & I are very well compensated for what we do; just trying to plan for dd when she arrives in the fall [ Reply | More ]

see above. i think that's about right. those who are at 40 hours and/or one is in school and/or have newer nanny pay closer to 600 and those with twins, long hours, etc. pay 700 or a a bit more (say if they have twins and long hours and a very experienced nanny) [ Reply | More ]

This is absolutely right. Also, many people do a weekly as opposed to hourly wage, and the number of hours vary slightly each week. Usually they will pay more for late nights, etc (at least, this is what we do) [ Reply | More ]

You better believe it. Mine gets paid by while dc is in school. Oh and that is on the books. If you have a good one you do what you have to to keep them - I don't want one of those do nothing nannies who just sit and talk and I don't have one. I also dont want anyone from the preschool stealing them away. You better believe I gladly pay what is necessary. [ Reply | More ]
