Following the "slow students should be segregated" thread: NYT article today about the vocational track. "Forget the old-fashioned “vocational ed” classes that sent students on a decidedly noncollege track. Over the last quarter-century, a new kind of high school program known as a career academy has proliferated, especially in low-income districts, that combines job placement, college preparation and classes beyond the vocational trades, from accounting to health care. Now, a long-term and rigorous evaluation of nine career academies across the country, to be released in Washington on Friday, has found that eight years after graduation, participants had significantly higher employment and earnings than similar students in a control group." http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/26/education/26careers.html?_r=1&ref=education&oref=slogin [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

THis wasn't really the vocational track, though - it was students from poorer schools having the option to "major" in a vocational field. It wasn't limited to the lowest achieving students at all. [ Reply | More ]

I went to all white public school in Long Island where 95%+ went on to college (every year, several to IVY and many to top 50) but my HS also taught autobody/mechancial courses as well. [ Reply | More ]

Plumbers in the city make six figures. I am not sure why kids should go to community colleges or equivalent, incur debt, and get secretarial jobs paying $30k/yr. Studies have shown going to colleges that are not in the top 200 do not improve earning potential compared to HS grads. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Forget medical school. You get a lot more bang for the buck if they can get settled into a good plumber's gig. [ Reply | More ]
