That would be rare, but I would choose Hunter in that scenario. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter - more extras, goes until 12th grade, progressive, no mandated testing, ability to develop own curriculum. That said, very few people get to choose, and to choose A over H, given the timing you have to accept H and wait for A and then turn down H. [ Reply | More ]

Do you have this option? They are about equal IMHO so I would go with geography and gut-feeling on fit for dc. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson has better facility, but Hunter has more extras. [ Reply | More ]

Does Hunter really have that many more extras? Both have chess, art, music, language instruction. Anderson has a better afterschool program. [ Reply | More ]

Well, from touring both schools, Hunter does offer a lot more compared to Anderson in terms of regular day (classes) and I actually liked afterschool at Hunter much more than Anderson. However, Anderson's facility is more cheerful and natural light is lacking at Hunter. [ Reply | More ]

Like what? As I posted above, I did not see Hunter having so much more. [ Reply | More ]

I can't remember them all, but woodworking, sewing, cooking, Japanese and Chinese, French, ceramics class, dance (national dance institute), instrument lessons (forget exactly which ones but sounded better than Anderson), swimming (not onsite)... I thought drama/theater was there, too, but can't remember that one. Computer lab and science room were very impressive. Oh, ice skating also. Library was far better. Hunter elem school PTA raised $500k and Hunter HS raised $1MM or so. They don't have to pay for building or teachers (every class has 2 teachers), so every cent they raise goes to extras. However, no sunlight. [ Reply | More ]

Woodworking, ceramics and sewing come under art instruction. No Japanese or Chinese until HS. Anderson also has NDI. Anderson has TADA theatre workshop in afterschool as well as Tae Kwon Do, Ballet, Cooking, etc. [ Reply | More ]

They are comparable: most of these are electives or taught as part of art or social studies units at Anderson, too (including chess, TADA, Salvadori architecture, Irish step dance, law, philosophy, TADA musical theater, printmaking/linotype, cooking, forensic science, Lucy Moses music/movement, more) And certainly available in extensive after school program (Latin, German, guitar instruction, fencing, TaeKwonDo, inline skating, woodworking, theater, more). Instruments at Anderson start in 4th grade - flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, alto sax, violin/viola, cello, percussion, keyboards are I think, most of the offerings. No swimming. (But I thought Hunter swim was only for 8th grade and it's 1x/wk at the college for half a year). Anderson just got huge tech grant and will have laptop carts for every teacher to use whenever they want, smartboards in every room, too. Library comparable. (Hunter's library had average aged book moved from 1957 to 1970-something recently.) Hunter just sent out urgent letter that they lost almost $1MM in funding (90% cut in city funding) so next year they are in terrible shape and will not be able to afford lots of extras unless parents pony up double because all $$$ will be filtered to HS where its reputation is key to whole school surviving. np - choice of languages, fine art and studio art, no ELA requirement, gender balanced class - all of which are little things but add up if one has a choice. Also as the poster above said there is a real sense of leadership in the school now (Hunter). Don't get me wrong - if DC had not gotten Hunter we would have thrilled to death to get a place and Anderson [ Reply | More ]

I believe you have to test again after the 6th grade to stay at Hunter. It's open to all the boros for the 7th - 12th grade [ Reply | More ]

Not exactly true, but you have to be in good academic standing (and with no behavioral issues). There are a handful of kids each year that are borderline, but most move on. They do recommend to some that they look elsewhere for a better "match." 7-12 is not a guarantee. [ Reply | More ]

We had the choice a few years ago and chose Hunter, though we also would have been totally happy with Anderson. Live on the UWS & geography never mattered. Hunter's close enough. I would say the K-12 was the most important factor, esp since the HS is one of the best public NYC HSs. Hunter's more laid back rep also appealed to us. [ Reply | More ]

^^^To answer questions above, Hunter's specials include 2 art classes every year (regular and studio - 2 fabulous teachers), a math lab class in 2nd grade & above in addition to classroom math, a library class with a wonderful librarian (& access to the HS library in older grades if needed), French & Spanish both until dc chooses in 3rd grade, chess, science with a great science teacher & assistant and for music, keyboards in early grades, instrument choice (violin, cello, clarinet, flute, trumpet) in older grades. I'm sure I've forgotten some things! [ Reply | More ]

Not in art class as far as I know. Perhaps in after school or one class or grade may do an art project in those media in class. Another point I thought about that I like about Hunter is that I love that the elementary school is small (48 or fewer per grade) and I also love that it expands to over 200 for middle/high school - just when the kids are getting tired of each other. Even though Hunter's building may lack a number of windows, at least the whole building just houses the one school. [ Reply | More ]
