it's not really a lottery school. it's a school that takes dcs from the neighborhood (with two outliers per class, also in wealthy, high-scoring d2) but must limit them for space reasons, much like ps41 or some d3 schools. the fact that it's small makes no difference, either, since it's a percentage of the total. finally, it's in wealthy tribeca where there are plenty of smart parents with money for enrichment. it's pretty much on par with 234, which makes perfect sense. no surprise, really. They don't do as well as Hunter kids in exmissions by the numbers but the suburban schools are usually larger and Hunter kids are selected for their test-taking & essay writing skills basically. [ Reply | More ]

Not by total percentages because they are huge, but the number of kids that go to elite schools is huge. My co-worker's DD just graduated from HS in Chappaqua and the placement of top 20-25% of the kids is pretty darn impressive. [ Reply | More ]

Hence the reason Hunter is superior to these schools "on average." But that is an unfair comparison b/c Hunter is a magnet school. [ Reply | More ]

There is no "regular" public school like Hunter. None have anywhere close to the Mean SATs, Merit Scholars, Westinghouse awards, Intel awards or exmissions. But this is an entirely unfair comparison. Hunter draws the top 1% (or so) from 1.2 million kids in NYC. Gifted tracks that turn into honors and AP tracks in some great public schools are in a similar league. Also, other cities have schools like Hunter also, like Thomas Jefferson in Fairfax, Pacific Collegiate in Santa Cruz, Talented and Gifted and Science/Eng in Dallas; Pineview Gifted in Fla, City Honors in Buffalo, etc. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I have an HG child, according to all those tests, but I have to say, I try not to focus on it. I had a PG brother and he was such a mess. He was brilliant--no question--but he didn't know how to have a friend or be part of a team or show care, even though I know he wished he could later in life. He ended up killing himself. That was such an awful experience that I'm focusing on trying to help my dd learn balance in life, how to take care of herself, make and keep friends and relationships. I don't worry about her being challenged academically because we do all sorts of supplemental stuff outside of school, but I do worry about her happiness as an adult.
