He won't understand. OK to talk to him about it, but the punishment is best around the time of incident. [ Reply | More ]

probably not useful to give delayed consequence, but maybe have a talk with him after school that biting is not okay and next time there will be an immediate consequence (and tell him what it will be) [ Reply | More ]

They almost killed my son. Very neglectful practice. The only families I know who are happy with them are ones who have never had a child get ill. You need a doctor who will know if something is wrong with your child not just say everything is fine no matter what. My neighbor jokes that every time Trib Ped. Says don't worry they run to the emergency room. I wish I had done that. Would have saved my son a terrible illness. [ Reply | More ]

didn't want to do anything about it (no testing, just told me he presents as normal). *Finally* at about a year they said they were going to be doing the bloodwork for anemia anyway, so why not test for celiac. After *5* vials of blood were drawn (ds's vein collapsed they took so much blood), either they or "the lab" lost the samples and I was told by an NP (very matter-of-factly) who wasn't even there that ds would have to come in again for testing b/c "there wasn't enough of a sample". I was pretty angry and asked to have the dr that performed the test to call me, only to be told that she was an NP and was just as capable of answering my questions as a dr. Long story less long, we ended up switching to Downtown Pediatrics and have never looked back. When ds came in the first day, she sent us up to NYU for bloodwork for celiac and gave us the name of a Pediatric GI dr (Levy) to go see. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I also used to see Schwartz (until our insurance changed). He is DEFINITELY old-school. He is BIG on Anticipatory guidance (like your child turned 18 months, here are the things to expect in the next 6 months). I don't know about 1 hour appointments, but he has the longest appointments of anyone pediatrician I've seen. (They get paid sooo little for examinations from insurance companies- maybe $50 not including vaccines. It barely appears to pay for overhead in this city. Its no wonder they rush kids in and out). That being said, I didn't like the other docs in the practice too much. Also, waits are LONG- about 1 hour on average in the afternoons. I still thought it was worth it to see schwartz, and would have continued if not for the insurance problems. [ Reply | More ]

The public schools are PS 3 and PS 41. Check insideschools.org for more info. This year, there was a lottery used to assign families to each rather than letting them choose, as was the case in the past. This was somewhat controversial. As for private schools, VCS, St. Luke's and LREI are all in the West Village. FYI in five years or so there will no doubt be a couple more public K-5 schools in the neighborhood. [ Reply | More ]

My kid is at a citywide. I think you can get distracted by what that means pretty easily. Within the group of kids in his class there are athletic kids, there are readers. There are puzzlers and there are inventors. They pretty much run the gamut of kids. But they all read at a fairly similar level and can enjoy class work as a group. If they were at extreme ranges, the more advanced kids would wind up waiting or entertaining themselves. That is not productive for them and teaches really bad habits. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe - it was a mediocre public school. I think back to my group of bright friends and how they all just fizzled out. We weren't challenged, we could cram for tests 10 minutes before and get perfect scores, we were allowed to read in class whenever we wanted. But I find it hard to believe that there are many teachers out there skilled in individually serving the smartest kids in a large class - sounds ideal but doubtful. [ Reply | More ]

np. That wasn't my experience at all, and I didn't see that among my friends when I was growing up. No one was praising me excessively for being smart; the problem was definitely a lack of challenge. School was too easy; it was possible to put in next to zero effort and still get As and Bs. In 10th grade I switched to a private prep school and got a rude awakening. Suddenly I was in a uniformly bright peer group and the school's expectations were very high, so I had to learn how to study and budget my time if I wanted to do well - which I did! It was tough, but I knew so many people who went through a similar rude awakening when they got to college, and I think it was worse for them than it was for me. [ Reply | More ]

Some "gifted kids" do just fine in a mainstream class. Some "gifted kids" do not, and do much better if they are educated among other kids like themselves. So the parents of "gifted" children should have choices available to them. It's not one size fits all. That is a separate issue as to whether the current system actually identifies "gifted" kids and if it does, whether the cut off is appropriate or the incremental differences in scores significant. You were doing soo good but then you had to do a very common UB mistake. You generalized. The SB is NOT a *harder* test. It is a more accurate test when it comes to IQ. The OLSAT is in some levels correlated to IQ tests but it is more demanding in terms of maturity (i.e. the kid needs to be able to stay focused, the tester is not going to "tickle" out what a kid really can do, etc. etc.). That's why you see so many kids acing the SB but bombing the OLSAT. The other way around is not really that common. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] 7mo has started sleeping on his tummy at night but he wakes up and for some reason cannot flip over to his back even though he knows how to do this during the day. I am exhausted, going in every night to gently turn him over. What to do? 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] 11 weeks pregnant. Have this weird pulsing thing going on down there. Doc thinks it could be vericose veins. Anyone experience this so early in pregnancy? Had previous m/c so panic about everything. She didn't want to see me about this. Should I have gone in? 1 Reply [ Reply | Watch | More ]

actually yes, it sort of matched my pulse, I think it was the umbilical cord doing its thing or some kind of implanting. It was like an alien was pulsing. All is well now, 2nd trimester, baby not an alien. Does it match your pulse? (maybe a little delay) [ Reply | More ]

Since birth I have been singing a special song for bathtime (Glub,Glub...one from my childhood) and one for bedtime(I learned the words to Lullaby). I also sing "The Motorcycle Song" by Arlo Guthrie-my mom used to sing that to me! For some reason "You are my sunshine" makes me cry when I sing it, so I just don't anymore. [ Reply | More ]

In the olden days, we used maclaren. They manuevered easily and fit in the smallest stores, folded up when we ate out. You girls and your monster truck strollers. They're cute and all but really not practical or considerate for this crowded city. [ Reply | More ]

Really? Where do you live? For my neighborhood in Bklyn I couldn't imagine having anything else. We were psycho set against getting it, but after trying everything realized it was the best. But that's just for local walks, we plan on getting an umbrella stroller for travelling and trips to the burbs. Haven't tried the new Britax though, is it as small width wise as the bugaboo?
