Basic math is all that comes up at anyone's work unless they work primarily with numbers. Math is the only subject easily scored and measured so everyone jumps to use this as a measurement for quality of curriculum. It is the least important topic when considering value and level of curriculum. Literacy, the ability to speak properly with a varied vocabulary used correctly, sentence structure, the ability to write and communicate effectively and well, having a strong understanding of world history rather than a smattering of it from textbooks allows dcs to develop an analytical, critical mind and help them understand modern day politics. These things are essential to a good education, not how you score on a state monitored algebra test [ Reply | More ]

np I see your point, but learning advanced math helps expand the brain. It's not just the algrebra skills that we all forget, it;s the pathways that builds, the alternate ways of looking at a problem that are important. I don't think either is more important. It's all important and the state of public ed is disgraceful in most of the country [ Reply | More ]

Not saying math is not important, but people on this board over signify its meaningfulness because it is the only way for them to measure or compare schools. A public school where dcs score 90s% means what we all know about public schools - they teach to the test to get funding from the state and keep their jobs intact. I promise you far better educations are being had elsewhere [ Reply | More ]

I find people with better verbal skills always say things like this about math. As if studying math doesn't/can't teach analytical skills. As if a good understanding of statistics and probability doesn't also help someone function better in the civic arena. Hell, just look at how many people are fooled by crackpots with crazy ideas about things like food allergies. [ Reply | More ]

This is stunningly untrue. Math is critical in a tremendous number of occupations, particularly the highest paying ones. Also, math provides the structural basis for logic. The vast majority of great philosophers were expert mathematicians, and many contributed equally to math theory. Obviously the discussion about which is more important Math or English (i.e. reading, comprehending and verbal skills) is a silly one - they are both critical. It is foolish to discount math. BTW, most history is essentially a rote memorization exercise. Clearly, a depth of historical understanding is important, but come on... [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but if a smart kid goes to some of those other schools (not LL, etc) I wonder if they would still do pretty well (I'm not sure). I looked up my elementary school on greatschools and it gets like a 7 out of 10, worse than 290, 6, 158, etc. But the kids in my top reading group went to - Yale, Cornell, Haverford, Penn, Rhode Island Design, another Penn, another Cornell, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I agree, but I think that what these numbers mask is that you still can't tell how the smart kids in the non-G&T schools are testing b/c they are mixed in with other kids. So a smart kid might end up scoring well at PS6 or at PS158. My schools numbers are eh overall, but the smart kids score well. [ Reply | More ]

I have very good skills in both, I was lucky to go to an excellent school in the city. The point is there is no sense in taking public school math scores and trying to determine which school is better based on results. Public schools teach to the test and that is never good for anyone. Those dcs aren't learning much more than memorization. Show me the public school dc who can write well, rare, or knows about history from a better source than a chapter in a broad textbook. That is the mark of a good education and the development of real analytical skills which will help them develop in the future. Not putting down math, just pointing out the limited significance of state administered test scores. [ Reply | More ]

If you think the problem with how history is taught in public schools is that it's taught out of textbooks and it's rote memorization, you are out of touch with how history is taught thse days. 1. It's not taught at all; 2. the teachers dont' know anything themselves; 3. it's taught out of order by politically correct themes so the kids can't follow any of it; 4. there are no textbooks, just random xeroxed handouts. STudents emerge not with a shallow knowledge of history but with no history at all. This is true for public elementary and middle schools that I'm familiar with. [ Reply | More ]

Remember when you look at the numbers that LL has about 5 spec ed kids in a separate class that are assigned by the district. You need to take these out to compare to A or N. In fact since it makes up 10% of the base (a HUGE number compared to any decent public school) it is best to always compare gen ed numbers - the city provides these. [ Reply | More ]

It's not smug, it's polite. She can never win with you. If she came out and said, "Well, we're going to Dalton and we'll just see what third tier school your kid ends up at," you would be sooo mad and posting on here like crazy. You are jealous; it has nothing to do with what she says or doesn't say. [ Reply | More ]

np: I have a dc in a private and when my youngest was in a toddler class I used to tell parents not to worry, be themselves, it will work out, ect. Since my youngest is a sib was I being smug?? I don't think so. I don't think your friend is being smug unless her tone is smug (which I doubt) [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry, I know how stressful the whole process is, but I think you need a little attitude adjustment about this. Your friend is doing the only thing she can -- which is being positive, without being cavalier and dismissive ("oh, it will all work out"), which she can't because it is a tough process and admission is not guaranteed. It's sounds like she's a nice person, and you can't hold where she and her dh went to school or who she knows against her, unless she is rubbing it in your face or being unkind about it, which doesn't seem the case. If you feel this way already, then you should just avoid her, starting now. You already know that she appears to have a few advantages that you don't. No one knows yet what that really means in terms of placement. My advice is just to avoid her, if you cannot handle it. [ Reply | More ]

Grow up? I was actually trying to provide helpful advice to the OP. What I suggested is 1 way of dealing with it, if the OP can't rise above her own feelings of jealousy. Rather than being judgmental (as you are), I think the OP could probably just get some advice on how to deal. Whether she can handle it is really up to her. But I'm not going to sit here and judge her for it. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I would agree with you on that, but frankly the schools process is hard enough (and we didn't even do private), especially when certain kids get into coveted schools and friend's kids didn't, or score comparison. It's all part of what everyone will have to deal with, and the reality is that negative feelings come out. So the question is: how to deal with it. Some people can deal directly, some prefer to avoid. [ Reply | More ]

so you learn to deal with the fact that life is not fair. Some people have better schools, or are prettier or have more money. So? Do all your friends have to be exactly the same level as you? That's no fun at all [ Reply | More ]

Or just grow up. There will always be people with more connections, more money, better looking husbands, smarter children, no matter who you are. Better to start being happy with what you have now -- and keep in mind, a lot of people would kill to live in Manhattan and have the money/wherewithal to be able to send their kids to private school here. So there are a lot of people you have a leg up on in life as well. Grass is always greener. [ Reply | More ]

I'm with your friend. She has a good attitude. I'm BTDT and please remember this...LEG status isn't what it used to be. Not like her dc is a sib. She's going into this with very little pull as a leg. You do need to relax because the DOA will see this. They want you to be yourself, relaxed and just normal. They don't want ppl who seem a bit crazy, acting like what they think the schools want them to act. DON'T let your jealousy come btwn your friendship...it would be your fault [ Reply | More ]
