Is anyone having 2nd thoughts about your private school based on the meet-and-greet with other parents? Probably naive, but I thought this school was low-key, and I'm startled by the level of wealth...seems like 85-90% IBs. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP: Honestly, all were welcoming and I shouldn't be biased. Maybe it's not really the wealth. I'm in a creative field and was hoping, if not more creative professions, there would at least be more working moms. Very, very few. [ Reply | More ]

People make snap judgments about schools here based on surface observations. Take it from someone who knows all of the schools very well, each has its own feel and philosophy and if yours is known for being down to earth than it will be. Schools have a way of curbing outside influences. [ Reply | More ]

rich ppl could be down to earth. I'm a FA mom at a downtown private with lots of "deep pockets" but as much $$$ as they have, they are low key about it. Not all but the majority [ Reply | More ]

Thank you for that perspective. I read about some of the people on socialite-type websites and was nervous. I have a high income by most standards, but our lives are nothing like that! [ Reply | More ]

Not personally, but a friend of mine, a native new yorker, had purposely avoided certain schools because she didn't want to get into the whole competitive wealthy scene. She, too, was taken aback by the wealth (designer clothing, topics of conversation, etc.) at the "low-key" school they chose. [ Reply | More ]

Going through this process we found that the one that pride themselves on being "low-key" were often the worst. [ Reply | More ]

No, we are very excited. People are nice and down-to-earth even if they have tons of money. We went to an event and it was very obvious in the group we were talking to that I was the only mom who had to work and you know what - nobody cared. We had a lot in common despite our modest income by NY private school standards. [ Reply | More ]

my dc is at a low key private, and i was startled not so much by the wealth but the showiness of certain people. but looking beyond simple appearances and my own snap judgment, I found people to be very nice. they make different money choices than I do. my dc is happy at the school and thriving. the teachers do a good job with the dcs. dh and I met some great families. look beyond your immediate impression. Honestly, I am surprised by how not showy the incoming moms (and few current moms I've met) are at DC's TT school. I know the money must be there (reputation), but so far alot of just regular moms like me - not wearing fancy clothes and shoes. Some work, some not. Thank goodness. [ Reply | More ]
