One Dad was in a suit with sneakers and there were a couple of Moms in stretchy pants and flip flops. I highly recommend the New Way series out of the UK. You will need to order them online from England from Nelson Publishing. Start with the white and pink series. (Skip the white without words). Have him sound out a page a night (or more if he can) and read the same book with you for a week. Phonics based, and much much funnier and more interesting than the Bob books (we've used both at home). They are not cheap though. We've used them through the yellow level with great success. If you travel for business/pleasure to London, certain bookstores have them two (one on Canary Wharf, I know of). If you think ds needs to practice three letter words in family groups, first, I may have another idea...but more boring, fwiw [ Reply | More ]

my dc has shown some interest in learning to read (she's almost 5, entering K), so I got her a few beginner reader books -- the Henry and Mudge books are v cute. I'm not particularly following a "method" -- I'm going to leave that to her teachers -- but I figured it doesn't hurt for her to start getting the idea of reading, and she seems to enjoy it (in limited doses). I used the letter factory, word factory and storybook factory dvd (you can buy mine if you want) and I went to a free seminar at NYPL (Donnell - which is closing) over the summer. Same here. Letter factory, word factory & storybook factory. I also did the "Teach Your Baby To Read" program with my son, but discontinued it because it was too hard for me to follow-up with it & work f/t (it's more for SAHMs IMO). My son was reading words at 3.5 yo, my daughter not so much. I don't think it had anything to do with what we did. I do feel sight word reading is better because now my son spells many words phonetically. [ Reply | More ]

I won't tell you "shouldn't" do it, but what is the point? Perhaps if dc hasn't learned to read by K you could do this next summer. My dc knew "letters" before K, but in beginning of K couldn't even read c-a-t -- would say "ca-ay-tee" and have no idea what word was. K teacher said "don't worry" and suddenly before end of K it "clicked" and dc became best reader in class in first grade. Just got 3rd grade ELA results and dc got perfect score. Late reading doesn't mean you will not be a good reader and why make dc hate it? Just keep reading books to your dc and it will be much better for dc. [ Reply | More ]

You asked for advice and I will give it you, don;t do it. It often backfires. Reading at this age has nothing to do with intelligence and forcing it can just cause a kid to hate it. Read to dc, if he/she is interested in phonics play some games, if not don't. If dc is developmentally ready dc will pick it up. [ Reply | More ]

In Japan it is typical for kids to learn to read at home, just as naturally as it is here to learn potty training at home, are their kids all messed up? Globally, it isn't that weird. Also, someone said awhile back to put the captions on your TV so it is always there when dc sees it. There are also cookie cutters shaped like letters you can use to make it fun. Decorate the cookies like things that start with that letter (put apple pictures on the A, make the Y yellow, whatever). String the cookies together and ask what it says. [ Reply | More ]

is your dc interested? my dd is forcing us to teach her to read and count, and she writes, just turned 5. i was opposed to that completely, but what can i do if she asks questions and is interested? i was an early reader myself, and was penalized at school for "bad attitute" - i was bored and was paying little attention. my grades in reading class (i studied abroad) were lower (but not totally bad) than of the kids who were just learning to read, but of course it helped with math and other subjects. i would say that writing/fine motor skills are more important at this age. I don't know, but this was the predominant theory when I was little (late 70s). You were supposed to wait for the teacher to teach you. Yes, I am for real. I would want my DH to feel a little jealous on occasion because a total absence of it signals to me that he doesn't care..it bothers me [ Reply | More ]
