I couldn't really scale back - preschool dropoff and pick up, etc. I just transfered db to the stroller or infant carseat and took him where we went. When he got to big for that he was down to one nap in the afternoon and I did try not to schedule gymnastics or swim lessons during that time [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My 4 yo DS is taking swimming lessons for the first time at camp. He's been in the water a ton in the past - jumping in off the side and we catch him. But he refuses to get in the water at camp. Only kid sitting on the side. It's killing me.... how do I get him to go in? He's had 9 chances so far and just won't go in. I am in the same boat, I have been sick for days since finding out about lame Angelina. I picked Vivienne because it wasn't popular. I just read an article "Will Vivienne be the next Isabella?" Apparently after Nicole and creepy Tom Cruise named their girl Isabella the name went from obscure to top 10. I used to like that name too. I am hoping Angelina will eventually loose her uber celebrity status It's such a personal thing to have a special rare name associated with your child be plastered across the media. You can't relate until it happens to you! The last thing I want is for people to think I named my child after a stupid celebrity noe do I want the name to become super popular. The only consolation I can give others feeling this very real personal pain is that it's going to have to take some time before the name can popular, I mean how many girl babies are born each year that will be named Vivienne? Also, perhaps Angelina will be collecting many more children so that people forget about the latest. Or hopefully our society will start focusing on real things instead of lame celebrity parents who don't even parent their children. I am also thinking my baby can use her middle name. Which can you believe is also a French name starting with M that sounds just like Angelina's baby. My husband is a French speaker. UGH! Stupid Angelina!!! [ Reply | More ]

yes, exactly isabella raised in popularity when tom cruise and nicole kidman named their child that about 7 or whatever years ago...that's why according to the article the name gained popularity. it went on to say that now that tom cruise is thought of as a wierdo and the association with scientology there hasn't been the same effect on the name suri. exactly, you didn't understand the post....it is not obscure but super popular now which is why there are as you said so many girls now named isabella. it became popular after tom cruise and nicole kidman named their child that 7 years or so ago. that's the point that people follow celebrities and it effects baby naming patterns and society in general. so, f you are a person who finds such things as naming your child after a family member than only to be asked if you named your child after some celebrity versus the family member you were trying to honor it can feel bad silly or not. it just shows our society's values even if one does not ascribe to them. Definitely not sleep training or scheduling--that is easy and wouldn't want/need help for that. We used a night nurse for 2 months w/ #2 and that was helpfu. We have a Sat. night sitter and couldn't do w/o her--totally essential. A personal assitant/part-time nanny--someone who could help w/ the kids but also do errands, light house work, jack of all trades type would be the most useful. I've tried the SAHM route this summer with my 4 yo and it's just too much. If she were in day camp every day for a few hours, it would be more bearable, but trying to "entertain" a non-napping little kid for 12 waking hours is very hard. [ Reply | More ]

I went back part-time and feel it is ideal. I get plenty of kid time and yet enough time with adults to stay sane. [ Reply | More ]

op: that is what i am thinking. i will feel guilty (seems like no matter what i do i feel guilty) if i go back full time and put her in daycare after being with me for the first two years of her life. i think she would love about four hours a day of kid interaction. [ Reply | More ]

why don't you try to improve your parenting? what makes you think you won't yell at her if you're working? [ Reply | More ]

i'm not a troll. i'm pointing out that she is assuming she yells at her dd for certain reasons. how does she know that once she's juggling the logistics/stress of working she won't still yell at her dd? if she wants to work, work. if she wants to stay home, stay home. but i worry if someone's reaction to unhappiness and/or stress is to yell at their child. I think an examination of parenting strategies is completely warranted. [ Reply | More ]

np - for many moms, our patience gets much shorter when we have to deal with DCs 24/7 without any real breaks. Plus, some children are just very active and demanding, and that can be a drain. At least she's acknowledging the problem - many moms don't and don't do anything about it, which is much worse. [ Reply | More ]

I have no guilt about working part-time. I am a much better Mommy because I work and my dd loves being with other kids (she is very social). She also gets to do lots of art projects that I never think of (or don't want the mess they create). We are both doing really well. I do think it depends on the child - some kids really need a lot of time with a parent. I am lucky because DD is so outgoing that she is happier seeing friends three days a week then just being home with me. [ Reply | More ]

op: i hear you. i know my dd will be much happier with kid interaction. she is also very outgoing. she is probably tired of being with me constantly. what do you do and how do you work out the schedule? [ Reply | More ]

I am in fund raising. I work a set 20 hours a week around my daycare schedule (I started at 2 1/2 days because that was what they could give me. I then changed to three days and I pull her out earlier on those days - or get the shopping done without her in tow. I prefer the shorter days and when she is in school full time I will probably work 4 or 5 shorter days so I can pick her up at the end of the day. I have been lucky in that I am allowed to set my schedule as long as I am consistant (my boss doesn't want it to change every week). Good Luck! [ Reply | More ]

everyone is different. SAHMing is the right thing for some people, and not for others. I think it sounds like being away from home working, part-time or full-time, would work great for you and make you much happier during the time you are with DC. really, don't give yourself guilt about this (and I am someone who left work to go very-part-time from home. that was right for me, but not for everyone!) Is it an option for you to work part-time or to get some part-time help w/ DD so you could have a little time to yourself. I am really happy that I get to stay home, but I know that it can be tough. I try to build in some downtime for myself every week. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My incoming first grader is not yet reading on his own, but is no longer interested in picture books, unless they're full of suspense/adventure. Any suggestions for books I can read aloud in this in-between phase? 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Do you want longer books? DS is that age and he likes: Kipling (esp. Rikki Tikki Tavi & the Mowgli stories), the Little House books, Catwings, Pippi Longstocking, anything by Roald Dahl. [ Reply | More ]
