My 4 yo DS is taking swimming lessons for the first time at camp. He's been in the water a ton in the past - jumping in off the side and we catch him. But he refuses to get in the water at camp. Only kid sitting on the side. It's killing me.... how do I get him to go in? He's had 9 chances so far and just won't go in. Doesn't even want to go to camp on swim days. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it sounds like he doesn't trust the teachers to me. you may have to pay a visit to the pool to reassure him it's okay. [ Reply | More

My 4 yo was like that. Just took him longer to feel comfortable, especially without me or dh right there with him. Nothing I tried worked. He didn't like taking lesssons--he just wanted to free swim on his own, in his own way, and ended up teaching himself [ Reply | More

My 3yo DD is the same - would go in the pool with her dad anytime, but when it comes to swimming lessons at camp - NO WAY! Sitting on the side, screaming bloody murder that she doesn't want to go to the camp pool... I guess sometimes they are unpredictable.
