We are pretty happy with the Inglesina Zippy. Folds easily with one hand, for busses and subways. Can carry the stroller in one hand, and baby on the hip. Biggest drawback: It doesn't stand upright when folded. PITA in restaurants. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] btdt moms: how do you handle kids being mean to each other? in my situation, i have 3.5yo identical twin dds. we were at a bbq this weekend and my one dd formed a 'club' with the host's dd. the two girls told my other dd that she couldn't play (her own sister yelled at her to go away), and i felt awful when she burst into tears and came running over to me. i'm not sure how to handle this since i was an only child growing up. any advice would be appreciated! 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I have two girls, 7 and 5, and "clubs" include everybody or no clubs. I call it what it is: mean. No meanness. You don't have to include your sister in everything, but you can't deliberately exclude her. For 3.5, maybe say everybody has to play together and suggest a game that needs more people. London Bridge is a good one for three. [ Reply | More ]

I have 5 yr old twin dds & one of the tough/best part of twins is that they learn the hard lessons about sharing and excluding way before other kids. Most schools deal with "clubs" starting in K where they say exactly what the poster above did - no clubs allowed that exclude somebody, you can't not let somebody join. You wouldn't have let one dd be mean like that in your own house, you were just thrown by dealing with the host's child too. Now that you have had a talk with both your dd, the next time this happens you can simply say to your own child "that is not allowed". You need to have a few pat phrases that you trot out once a day that they understand instantly "be nice" & "family shares" are big ones here & my dd understand the subtext that the consequence of not listening is a timeout or toy taken away. My ds is mean to my dd at times but they are 5 years apart. I usually talk to my ds about his behaviour and sometimes there is punishment involved. I think it is important to teach siblings to stick up for one another and that they shouldn't be the cause of their sibling's hurt feeling - particularly when there is other people involved. That said - you also need to give each dc a chance to make their own friends - e.g., if someone invites one of your dds to a playdate - you shouldn't insist they invite the other too. [ - ] Non-child related question (need advice): new bathtub was delivered a week ago and inspected by 'designer'. GC installed it and when protective tape was pulled off one corner, glaze came off exposing cast iron. My question: who is responsible for this 'mistake'? Store that sold us the tub will send someone to fix it and offered to take $100 off. Is this considered good enough? So mad that GC didn't do a thorough job inspecting it! You wanted the GC to pull the protective tape off before installing? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the protective tape? [ Reply | More ]

op:true! sorry, I know I sound irrational but so many things have gone wrong with this renovation and I'm getting so frustrated. Okay, would you settle for $100 off and fixing it or would you ask for more $$ from tub/bath store? [ Reply | More ]

Depends on the effectiveness of the fix. It sounds like a defect in the tub. [ Reply | More ]

This is a manufacturing defect most likely (not GCs fault). Surface was improperly prepared before glaze was applied; or, glaze was applied too thickly (or glaze itself was too thick). I would send the tub back if possible - the chances are excellent this will occur elsewhere on the tub. [ Reply | More ]

op:ita that it's a manufacturing defect. It is also a company I'd never heard off but recommended by 'designer' based on feedback from bath store. I found a Porcher cast iron bathtub that could have worked for our small space but designer pushed for this (probably because he gets a commission on things he sources). Not sure that I have any other choice but to accept this, right? [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] IVF QUESTION: We got the news today that we are a BFP on our 1st IVF cycle. 4 weeks far along.... question and big surprise to me is that PIO + Estrogen shots are suppose to continue for 5 more months???????? I was under the impression that after you received the BFP- no more shots....WRONG.... why, why do I have to continue with the shots.... (I know I know to support the pregnancy, part of the fertilty treatment / therapy....but WHY? WHY for soooo long.......???????????????????????????????????????? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

most people have to continue with the shots through the first trimester. since your ovaries were so overstimulated from the IVF hormones, you are not producing progesterone on your own. the prog helps keep the lining of your uterus thick to hold the embryo(s). i know they are painful, but you will be used to them soon and the pain does subside. try icing your butt for a few minutes before injection and then massaging after. i found that to really help. also be sure to rotate butt cheeks! good luck. Ask your doctor if there are other methods you can use. They now have water-based progesterone shots which use a smaller needle. I was experiencing some numbness from the shots, so my doctor let me switch to suppositories at 7 weeks...new research suggests it is just as effective. I might get a second opinion, though. I also got pregnant on first IVF, and only have to continue progesterone until 10 weeks. Another friend of mine has a history of m/c, so her ob/gyn is keeping her on progesterone until 12 weeks. I believe around 10-12 weeks is when the placenta has taken over progesterone production. I would ask your doc if there is a medical reason why you need to be on the shots for so long. It may be specific to your diagnosis. [ Reply | More ]

I live in the east village and with both of my girls I used a combi. Lots of room, light, easy to fold, great on buses or taxis. I'm pg with #3 and will get another combi. I tried the big, $$ stroller carriages but they were only good for walks not for buses and taxis [ Reply | More ]

Are you kidding? For cobblestone? We have the Techno and I hate it with regular sidewalks, so much in fact that we bought a BOB when dd was 7mo. The BOB is large so I wouldn't suggest it for OP, but OP should look for something with decent size tires, it makes all the difference in the steering and ride. [ Reply | More ]

I would start by talking to my dc to find out the context, if they were hurt, etc. If the story doesn't fall apart there, then I would approach the nanny. If it did fall apart, I would start the "why we don't tell stories accusing other people of being mean" speech. [ Reply | More ]

I don't assume the 3 y/o is lying. But I know that 3 y/o's do exaggerate and tell tales for attention. Before I accused someone of gross misconduct, I would do a bit of investigating. Where did it happen (so I can ask some other people who may be around), what was dc doing when the nanny him him/her (was it an inappropriate reaction, inappropriate discipline, or a random explosion of anger), etc. [ Reply | More ]

Talk to nanny broadly about discipline techniques and see what she says. 3-yo's do have a tendency to fib for attention. I would not be to quick to accuse the nanny. I would get a nanny cam though. [ Reply | More ]

And in general, non-violent and self-regulated adults do not become violent and short-tempered overnight. If there has been no indication of the nanny hitting before, she deserves for her employer to at least ask a few questions before acting. [ Reply | More ]

I want to ask the child and any potential witnesses. This is employment, plain and simple. If one of the analysts on my team told me that another analyst hit him, I can't just fire the accused. It's no different with a nanny. Just because they work for a family and not a company doesn't change things. [ Reply | More ]

Before she talks to nanny, she needs to talk to other people who have seen the nanny interact with her DC. He's probably telling the truth, but if she hears that the nanny is usually warm and affectionate, then maybe he's not. [ Reply | More ]
