most people have to continue with the shots through the first trimester. since your ovaries were so overstimulated from the IVF hormones, you are not producing progesterone on your own. the prog helps keep the lining of your uterus thick to hold the embryo(s). i know they are painful, but you will be used to them soon and the pain does subside. try icing your butt for a few minutes before injection and then massaging after. i found that to really help. also be sure to rotate butt cheeks! good luck. Ask your doctor if there are other methods you can use. They now have water-based progesterone shots which use a smaller needle. I was experiencing some numbness from the shots, so my doctor let me switch to suppositories at 7 weeks...new research suggests it is just as effective. I might get a second opinion, though. I also got pregnant on first IVF, and only have to continue progesterone until 10 weeks. Another friend of mine has a history of m/c, so her ob/gyn is keeping her on progesterone until 12 weeks. I believe around 10-12 weeks is when the placenta has taken over progesterone production. I would ask your doc if there is a medical reason why you need to be on the shots for so long. It may be specific to your diagnosis. [ Reply | More ]
