[ - ] Noticing strange smell in my apartment. Wondering if it could be mold in the floor or walls. We also recently corrected a water leak in our bathroom, but a significant amount of water had escaped over time before we discovered it. Does this sound like it could be a mold problem to anyone else? TIA! 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] Should my friend end a relationship with this guy? They met through EHarmony.com about six months ago. She just found out that his "girlfriend" when she met him- who he claims he left for her- was the manager and worked at a "massage parlor" in a strip mall in NJ. He met the ex when she gave him a hand job post massage and he started "dating" her. He also loaned her 40K to buy a house in China and gave her a car. He only broke things off with her when he started getting serious abt my friend. Also, when he and my friend were first planning to have sex she asked him to get tested for all stds and he did but the results weren't accurate bec he had slept with the prostitute/madam a few weeks earlier. He presented the results to my friend as "clean" and they have been having unprotected sex ever since. Now she is insisting he be retested and he is complying. He is remorseful abt having kept all of this from her- said he did so bec he was afraid he would lose her. What would you advise your friend in this situation? I will post my opinion after I hear from you all bec I don't want to bias your responses. Thanks so much! 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think it is hard to tell what a miscarriage is from that early. If you are having a CVS chances are that maybe you are older or at higher risk in pregnancy anyway and some of those Genetic traits end up in miscarriage anyway. I had the CVS in NYC, Dr. Saltzman, he is very good, no garuntees of course. I know of one person who attributes the CVS to miscarriage and she was having twins. There are tons of discussions on it and I read a lot of them to make my decision. Good Luck, it was scary for me too. [ Reply | More ]

Risk of miscarriage following CVS is probably 1:300 or so in experienced hands. If you are unsure-do the nuchal/1st trimester screen. If the risk is high after that test, do the CVS. if the risk is low, then you may feel a little better about waiting until 15 weeks to get the amnio done. What is the reason that you are getting the CVS? Age? or is there somethig else? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.23.08, 08:17 PM Flag

op: the nucheal/triple screen is only 85-90% effective, meaning you're eft with a 10-15% of a false negative. I had a friend who received 1/10,000 chances from her screen last fall and then the baby had turner's syndrome. Another friend who experienced two chromosomal abnormalities. The risk of CVS or Amnio (which appear to be about same now, in experienced hands) is more acceptable to me than the risk of a false negative on the screenings. I have another friend who had twins, screens all came back fine and then in the delivery room, one of her sons has down's. As my ob said, I've seen a cluster. Also, every doc I can find said they would do diagnostic vs. screening if it was themself or their wife. I'm in early 30s. [ Reply | More ]

It's only in girls and presents when the child has only one X chromosome instead of 2 (or 1 fragile one I think). It's a sex linked disorder and results in no reproductive functioning for the child and the kids are typically very small, if they live. That new fiction book "The Condition" is about a family with a turner's syndrome child. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know the lifespan. I should have clarified, after she did the screening, she had a spontaneous miscarriage at 14 weeks and they tested the remains, which is how the baby was diagnosed. Very sad but my friend was also distressed the screening told her only a 1/10,000 chance of chromosomal problems. Wow, I just read on wikipedia that 98% of cases of turner's end in miscarriage and that 10% of all miscarriages are accounted for by Turner's. So it's common, and again, surprising that the screening wouldn't have caught this. [ Reply | More ]

screening looks for the risk for Down syndrome and Trisomy 18 (three copies of chromosome 18). It does not check for all chromosome abnormalities. People that are born with Turners have normal lifespan, normal intelligence (usually, although there may be an increased risk for learning disabilities), but are born without functioning ovaries. They are infertile, and need estrogen supplementation to develop secondary sexual characteristics [ Reply | More ]

I had an mc at 3 mo and it was found that the reason was Turners syndrom; kids who are born w it usually have heart problems and learning disabilities and are born infertile. I was not suggesting using the nuchal as an alternative to prenatal diagnosis. I was suggesting using the nuchal to help decide between early and later diagnosis. If the nuchal was wildly abnormal, then I wouldn't want to wait until 15 weeks for an amnio. If it was normal, then I could wait the extra month for testing [ Reply | More ]

Why do you suggest this if my concern is the low effectiveness rates of the screening (85-90%) and you're suggesting getting an amnio anyway? Why not just do CVS? Especially when, as discussed, risk rates are comparable. I feel like I'm missing what you're saying and am trying to understand... [ Reply | More ]

CVS 1:100, amnio 1:400; 10% false positive (not negative) for nuchal/triple screen...that's why it's a screening. Could you imagine if 10% of the people who did nuchal screen (which almost everyone does) tested negative and really had abnormalities...that would be an unfathomable amount of babies. Bad info! No, you are wrong also. The screening has a detection rate of 85-90%. Meaning in 10-15% of cases, there is a false negative - the screeing indicates there is no problem with the fetus but in fact there is. Your "could you imagine" scenario is the way it is! Look it p or ask your OB/Gyn...I just talked to mine about it, as well as the doctor who did the CVS... [ Reply | More ]

you have the it the wrong way...it's 10% false positive...meaning 10% of the time a patient is told there is a problem and further testing reveals none: that's why it's called a screening. Miscarraige for CVS is 1:100, amnio 1:400. [ Reply | More ]

np: an experience practitioner has much lower pg loss rates than those (for both amnio AND CVS) - althouh I believe that the loss rate for CVS is still somewhat higher. it is possible however that the higher loss rate is more attributable to the fact that it is 1st tri (when risk of loss is greater anyway). Yes, I have just experienced a miscarriage after a CVS. I have had 3 miscarriages before this one, all previous miscarriages were before week 8. The CVS was done 3-5 days before the fetus died, at week 11. The US was normal, with normal heart rate before the procedure - and there were no chromosomal abnormalities. According to some older studies, there is a slightly increased risk of miscarriage after CVS and amniocentesis for women with recurrent miscarriages. Unfortunately, I was not aware of the increased risk before electing to have the procedure was done. [ Reply | More ]

if you were bleeding internally it is usually black colored in your poop, red means a fissure or hemmriod, not to worry, get prep h and use it for a couple of days [ Reply | More ]
