i think some docs will not take on new patients with certain insurance but will continue to accept that insurance from existing patients. our ped is like this. Cornell has a few hospital affiliated practices, you can look them up on their website and i find that those practices tend to accept a greater variety of insurance. good luck, i know it sucks! [ - ] WWYD. Our babysitter normally works pt (4 hours) in the afternoons picking up the kids from school/camp until we get home. This week she'll also be coming in the morning to take dcs to camp - which will take about an hour all in. Do I just pay her hourly rate for the extra hour or so for each day - or do I need to pay for more hours even though the kids are at camp all day? 27 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

What is the expectation of what she will do between dropping them off at camp and picking them up? If she's at your house, then you need to pay her something. If she's on her own to do as she likes as long as she is back in time to pick them up, then I'd pay for more than the "hour" of drop off, but not for all the hours. So say her hourly is $15 - maybe I'd pay an extra $100 for the week. [ Reply | More ]

There is no expectation for her to come back to our house to do anything - just to pick them back up at the end of the day. [ Reply | More ]

Then I'd offer as above and if she says something you can negotiate. if camp is 9-3pm and she's never worked for you duringthe day, I highly doubt that she suddenly expects to be paid for all those extra hours. it would be different if she'd been your ft sitter and you wanted to NOT pay her since the dcs were in camp all day. Generally she is not a ft sitter - but when she's come in the morning if dcs are sick or off from school then I've paid her for the whole day. I've never just asked her to take the kids to camp/school before with no resposibility for them during the day [ Reply | More ]

I reiterate - offer something above her hourly for the added responsibility and see what she says. "Is $100/week for taking them to camp fair to you?" How much are you paying/week for the 20 hours she works already? [ Reply | More ]

$400. I think I'll try this question. I may need her to do this sometimes when dc starts a new school in September. [ Reply | More ]

see, i think under the circumstances, if you pay her $500-600/week, you essentially ARE paying her almost a FT salary. $20/hour is a pretty high rate for FT hours (esp. when dcs are in school or camp all day) whereas it's a more typical rate for PT. So you maybe could say - "with the added responsibility of taking them to camp, i was going to increase your pay to $550." If she normally doesn't work all day until camp, then your extra pay is $ she would not mormally be getting - which is different than if she gave up an AM job to do this for you. [ Reply | More ]

np: I disagree with the $100/week. At minimum, OP should pay the nanny for the extra 1 hr/day plus her extra commute time. That would be about 2.5 hr/day or 12.5 hr/wk. [ Reply | More ]

So your opinion is more than exact time spent with DCs to include extra commute time but not for the whole day? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.21.08, 02:32 PM Flag

I think that would be a fair solution. The other issue is whether bringing your dcs to school/camp in the morning is keeping her from doing another job. Then she might have an argument (an it wouldn't be unreasonable) that she is entitled to the full day of pay since she is foregoing other pay. [ Reply | More ]

You need to talk to her about this ASAP! She may think she's getting paid for the entire day. How far does she live from your place? If far, then you should pay her for more than just an hour. Maybe pay her for her extra commute time too. [ Reply | More ]

Its about 45 minutes to our house and then an hour to camp using public transportation. But would it be reasonable for her to think she is working the whole day when I only asked her to come in to take them to camp? How do I approach this question - what do you expect to get paid to take the kids to camp? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.21.08, 02:17 PM Flag

it actually would be reasonable for her to think that. A lot of nannies do what your nanny is doing this week and get paid for the whole day. Technically, the work day starts when your nanny takes your kids to camp and ends when you get home. But since your nanny is normally PT, she might not have that expectation. You'll need to talk to her tonight. [ Reply | More ]

Where is the camp in relation to where she lives? I would figure out if she would have any true free time going back and forth from camp to her home and then back again. If she will spend the better part of the day on public transportation, I would pay her for the entire time. If she will be able to go home for several hours in between drop off and pick up, I wouldn't. [ Reply | More ]

but MOST nannies go from FT work to kids being in school so essentially that would be a cut in hours. a babysitter that normally only works 20 hours/week, but that now will work 25 is another situation. i know students who do jobs like this because they can do drop off, still take classes all day and then arrive in time to pick up kids from camp. they are not giving up a ft job to do this. a student is one thing. it's quite likely that an older nanny who isn't in school and has a family to support is going to start shopping around for a f/t job if that's essentially what she's doing but being paid by the hour. especially if there's a gap between shifts that makes it hard to take another job. [ - ] Any ideas on creating an IEP. I have an almost 3 year old son (8/7/05) and just in the last two months we noticed that he has some issues - definitely sensory, speech develop. etc. We have our CPSE meeting in a week and I have no idea what to ask for. I have a feeling they will recommend an all special needs class opposed to an integrated. But how much OT and Speech can I ask for without getting laughed at? Would they give him a SEIT in an integrated program? This is all so confusing and overwhelming. Any thoughts greatly appreciated 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

What do the evaluators recommend? The max amount of SEIT hrs is 15 hrs for an integrated program. Any more than that and CPSE will say your ds should be in a SN class. Ask for as much OT and Speech as you think is necessary. I had a friend whose son had 5 days of therapy -- 3 days OT, 2 days speech (or the other way around). If you're in District 3 (meeting with Sybill), ask for more than you need because you will probably get less. [ Reply | More ]

Whoever is doing the evaluations should be able to give you an idea of what to ask for (or what you can get). Because my ds was accepted to a special ed preschool he didn't get any additional services. If your son doesn't need socialization then you can ask for services at home or at a center like Making Milestones if you prefer it. If you are getting a SEIT ask for one to cover all the hours (this is much easier for scheduling from your end and harder for them). [ Reply | More ]

You don't create the IEP, the CPSE does. Have you had him evaluated yet? For sensory, there are providers/gyms that will do evaluation on site; for speech/language, etc., a private or city evaluator will do test either at your home or at a center. They usually prescribe SEIT under 14 hours and OT in 30 or 45-minute segments (like 2 @ 45). Same for play therapy, etc. You don't do the asking - they usually tell you. [ Reply | More ]

From what I've read, ideally you and the CPSE come up with a plan together. I've heard that you should have some idea of what your child needs before your meeting so you can negotiate if you feel the services aren't enough. [ Reply | More ]

My mom was also kind of cold to my DD. She's only 6 mos but too heavy for my mom to hold for very long. So my mom would talk to her in the bouncy seat, but say basically the same thing "so, what do you think? Ah hah, is that so?" for about 30 min. and then go back to reading her book. Maybe I am being too hard on her, but I'd think she could be a bit more imaginative with her own grandchild. She also put DB in the crib and let her cry multiple times. Made me wonder what she did with me when I was young. Then I felt bad because DH was away this weekend and DB got to me and I let her cry it out in the crib for a while, just like my mom would have done. [ Reply | More ]

Not suggesting that cold and disengaged is good but, really - how much can you do with a baby. I think there is too much emphasis on interaction and constant stimulation, etc. in parenting today. I mean, we even us ethe word parenting as a verb... [ Reply | More ]

Now that I am a mom I actually think my Mom was really good. But she yelled a lot (nothing mean once, just all day long and in front of friends) and I try not to yell. [ Reply | More ]

Me too. Great mom, who was a yeller and now I fear I'm a yeller in training. My momwas older when she had me. I'm 42 with a 4 YO and I swear, I think it's peri menopause that makes me a yeller. Hate it about myself. Arrgh, sigh. [ Reply | More ]

get thee to a therapist. Common fear. Better that you recognize it than deny it. I had a couple of years of therapy working through the relationship with my mother before I had kids. Smartest thing I ever did. [ Reply | More ]

Trust me I have had years and years of therapy. This weekend just hit home for me. It was rough. But good. I am trying to take time to focus on DS now. [ Reply | More ]

Some women just aren't that into babies. My mother had no interest in kids till they were old enough to read and have a logical conversation with - her mother was exactly the same way. I, on the other hand adore babies and know I am going to miss the physical intimacy of snuggling and just wrapping your arms around a tiny child. My issues may come later when they are teenagers, or maybe I am over compensating for not being hugged enough as a child, who knows? [ Reply | More ]
