It depends on where you live and the mode of transportation the child would use (and, to an extent, your economic class). We live in New York City and I take my 12 year old to school by subway. She could certainly walk back and forth by herself if we lived closer. In New York, in middle class families, I would say most kids start to travel on their own to school between 5th and 9th grades. I see kids younger than this going to school on their own in poorer neighborhoods. [ Reply | More ]

They are psychologists and certified to administer IQ tests. So, they are export enough to determine giftedness. [ Reply | More ]

They can administer the test and based on that, determine who is or isn't, but they are not experts. They don't ask about developmental milestones reached or seek any other input. They are not expected to, of course, but one shouldn't mistake them for an expert in the field. [ Reply | More ]

I thought of her as a sister and she disappeared from my life. It took years to get over it. Still, I reply to her e-mails. She says we'll both be in our home town at the same time. I say perhaps we can get together. Then she disappears. Fuck that!!! 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know if they had that when I was in school graduated 1987, I know was not, in any event. I think it is so pretenious hearing someone say their kid is gifted and in a gifted program. I don't know why, maybe I'll feel different if it turns out I have a gifted child, who knows. It always sounds like bragging, it seems every person I meet has a gifted child and is way advanced for his/her age, so it doesn't seen that impressive anymore when I hear it. [ Reply | More ]
