[ - ] Any advice to help me decide if we should have a third dc? We have 2 beautiful little girls - dh is in favor of a third, but I'm on the fence. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Without thinking, what is your first emotion when you first get your period? A little relief, or a little disappointment? [ Reply | More ]

Really nothing right now - still on BCP. I'm just trying to decide if we should try. I'm one of three - so sometimes I think 3 would be great, sometimes not. [ Reply | More ]

I've wanted another baby since #2 was born, but I did tell dh I only wanted to try for a 3rd if he was also on board for #4. 3 to me just feels like someone will always be left out. [ Reply | More ]

Is part of your and your husband's desire for a third to have a son? If not, great, you'll be happy with a b or g. If so, be honest about this with yourselves so that you're not "disappointed" with another girl. I know family friends who just had their third girl (us told them it was a boy) and the whole extended family is "upset". It's so sad to me that they feel this way. [ Reply | More ]

I ahve apretty big span though - I could not have done 3 close together. My oldest is going into 2nd and my youngest is going into k. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Headed to DH's parents' country house for Labor Day, most likely. Went there for July 4th weekend. We are very, very lucky to have that option, only... they are heavy smokers. I mean, can't go more than 45 minutes typically (if locked down they would wait up to 2 hours, I think) unless sleeping. DH's father very kindly smokes outside in consideration of the baby. DH's mother is not very well and has trouble w/mobility; she has been asked-- repeatedly-- to smoke only in her room with the door closed, and to keep the door closed when not there. She has agreed to this. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

SORRY, pressed "post" too soon. She has agreed and yet... TWICE I found her smoking in the kitchen while we were once two rooms away and the other time just off the kitchen, in the guest room. [ Reply | More ]

(OP again) I must be an idiot because when I press "enter" for a paragraph it posts. Anyway... am considering staying at a nearby hotel for the next visit. DH thinks this is awful and hurtful to his parents, but I think having our daughter sit in a smoky house-- and having his mother, however ailing and otherwise considerate, disregard the baby's (18 mos) health. Am I crazy to want to stay at a hotel? I can't take the stress for another visit, I think. [ Reply | More ]

It's not harmful enough to ruin your relationship with dh's parents. If she lights up in front of kid just take her in another room. [ Reply | More ]

(OP) It's just so stressful walking around feeling badly for asking them not to smoke... seeing his father be so mindful... and see his mother just doing whatever. I keep thinking that I'm trying to build DD's relationship w/them, but sacrificing her health. [ Reply | More ]

Turn off the drama mamma. Think about how stressful it is for your in laws to have someone like you in their house watching them like an eagle for wrongdoing. Also I think the term "sacrificing her health" is something I would apply to driving in a car with no seatbelts or playing with firecrackers - not occasional second hand smoke 2x a year. [ - ] We just moved to Japan. I'm now in the process of registering kids for school. My dh wants our 4 yr old to attend a Japanese preschool instead of attending an American program. I don't think this is for the best. He is very bright but is a terrible speaker. I can barely understand him. What would you do? 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My friend lives in Irvington. Her kids play soccer all the time and are happy. Lots of people there work for the NY Times for soem reason. It's green and pretty. She's bored, but kids are happy. it's a bit white bread; not a great place for an outlier type kid or adult - if that applies. [ Reply | More ]

There are 5 sections/5 elementary schools in Scarsdale. The Edgewood section is the only section with small homes under 1M. Kids join up w/other 4 neighborhoods for middle and high. [ Reply | More ]

Edgewood is known by other people in Scarsdale as "the hood". Personally imho, if you can't afford other parts of Scarsdale you should look elsewhere such as Larchmont-Mamaroneck (both share a middle school and a high school) and virtually all recreational and town facilities. [ Reply | More ]

My friends are happy in Mamaroneck and New Rochelle and Larchmont. I'm not sure if there is a town pool - the golf clubs and "beach" clubs there seem to be expensive - but they've made lots of friends. I think Katonah has a more country in an upscale way vibe, but the commute is worse. My friend lives on Lake Katonah and it seems really nice there. You really have to go with a realtor and see what you can get for your money -- don't go by UB. There are things in Scarsdale for under $1million but they aren't as large as what you could get in Katonah, for example. [ Reply | More ]

New Rochelle and Mamaroneck are more affordable and less white-bread than Larchmont...very few under 800k in Larchmont though. under a Mil, you have good pickings. Plenty to do in these 3 sound-side towns. [ Reply | More ]

Larchmont and Mamaroneck are very different from New Rochelle. New Rochelle is a city to begin with and is truly diverse, just over 50% white, with black and hispanic populations each being almost 25% (the northern section is less diverse and more affluent in general). Mamaroneck's waterfront communities are actually more affluent than Larchmont Manor especially Orienta which is one of the top 50 most affluent in the and includes homes that cost up to $20 million(Larchmont's most affluent neighboorhood), but it is more divese economically and racially (whites are about 75%, hispanics about 15%, other minorities (mostly blacks, asians, mixed race) make up the rest. In Larchmont whites are 90%, hispanics about 5% with other minorities making up the rest. [ Reply | More ]

My family used to live in Hastings, and we loved living there. My dcs were too young for school, but I think the schools there are very good. We live in NYC now (we have moved twice since living there, for career reasons). Dh works such long hours now that adding a commute would mean he never sees dcs during the week. If not for that I would prefer to be in Hastings still. If you enjoy walking, the place is beautiful, and there are amazing walking trails that you can travel for miles.Other pluses: people are friendly, there is a wonderful library, also a fantastic community pool and community gardens. The train ride to NYC is easy and it is a fun weekend trip with the kids. We did it all the time when we lived there. [ Reply | More ]

I think there is a gas station on Hicks St. around Summit (right before Hamilton Ave.) that does them. There is also a place on Union St. right around 3rd or 4th ave that does car repair and I think also inspections. On right hand side of St. as you drive toward Prospect Park. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] This is going to sound weird, and probably get me flamed, but does anyone ever have cultural/racial identity issues? I am white, but grew up in a heavily black, inner city neighborhood, and was basically of the same economic class as my peers in my public school. There were perhaps 4-5 white children in the entire school. Thus, most of my close childhood friends are black, and I grew up listening to negro spirituals, without even knowing that this was perhaps different than my cousins who went to private (read: mostly white) schools. Even in my high school, which though also public, was more racially/culturally diverse, I was involved in gospel choir, and had mostly non-white friends. The same thing happened when I went to college and was in the gospel choir. I'm moving to a very wealthy, white town soon, and fear I might not be able to fit in the way I have in all my other urban living environments. As a side note, I am an Ivy League Ph.D., so I think all the moms who believe sending their kids to a "crappy" (read heavily poor/minority) school will ruin their children's future are out of their minds. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Well, you might have issues just moving from an urban to suburban environment. I am white but have never lied outside of NYC & get hives just thinking about it. My SIL lived a couple of years in Sugar Bush, Texas (Geore Bush country) and she could not stand it. My brother got posted to Ghana & she was thrilled & loved the shocked/horrified reactions of all her neightbors when she said she would be happier in Africa then there! [ Reply | More ]

Very lengthy post, so not sure what you are really looking for. I grew up poor and Chinese immigrant in a mostly black/Latino school, and I was the only Chinese girl in my grade. Now married to a Jewish-American dh who grew up in the burbs, and have leap-frogged up to an upper middle-class existence in a gentrified part of Brooklyn. Yes, sometimes I wonder how I got here, and sometimes i have felt culturally out of it. But a sense of humor and open mind will get ou pretty far. [ Reply | More ]
