This is going to sound weird, and probably get me flamed, but does anyone ever have cultural/racial identity issues? I am white, but grew up in a heavily black, inner city neighborhood, and was basically of the same economic class as my peers in my public school. There were perhaps 4-5 white children in the entire school. Thus, most of my close childhood friends are black, and I grew up listening to negro spirituals, without even knowing that this was perhaps different than my cousins who went to private (read: mostly white) schools. Even in my high school, which though also public, was more racially/culturally diverse, I was involved in gospel choir, and had mostly non-white friends. The same thing happened when I went to college and was in the gospel choir. I'm moving to a very wealthy, white town soon, and fear I might not be able to fit in the way I have in all my other urban living environments. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]
