Camp mom here (am an assistant director at a day camp): yes, the typical range is $40-$75+. I assume DC has been in camp for 4 weeks. [ Reply | More ]

Wow - I thought $50 for the head counselor and $25 for the assistant/CIT was more appropriate. I already broke the bank to send dcs to camp. What happens if you don't tip? [ Reply | More ]

Nothing of course. And that's about how much I tip - maybe $40 for the head and definitely $20-25 for the assistant counselors [ Reply | More ]

Wow, my ds goes to a little country day camp (mornings only) & I have never met his counselor, I know his CITs are only 14 yrs old. Am I really supposed to tip them? [ Reply | More ]

Probably not in your case. It's not full day, the CITs are too young, and it's not a NYC camp. [ Reply | More ]

whew, thanks - the whole 5 wks only costs $350 so that would be a surprise! [ Reply | More ]

Huh? so when you spend $400+ a week you have to tip each person? [ Reply | More ]

It's more what the community does and the NYC community tips. Also the CITs aren't that young - more college-aged. [ Reply | More ]

Like most people who work with children, they are paid little. Tips are greatly appreciated. [ Reply | More ]

What if it's a "camp" run by my DC's preschool? The "counselors" are the teachers. Am I expected to tip them? [ Reply | More ]

WHY would you tip a camp counselor? Seriously. I was a counselor from age 14-20 and was never tipped. [ Reply | More ]
