[ - ] anthro mom here. One of the things I'm currently writing about is not the role of UB and YBM in lives of users, I've got that down, but what is the reason for all of this anxiety around getting the kids into the "right" schools and making sure the "right" tutors etc? Is it a moral panic (Stanley Cohen - fear that "they" are taking away "our" spots in society) or is it part of the Rug Rat Race (Ramey and Ramey where competition for spots starts earlier and earlier) or is it loss of a true sense of community (Turkle due to technology or Putnam's Bowling Alone)? 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think it's anxiety-based, and comes from a fear that we are all playing a zero-sum game. There isn't enough wealth/privilege/power to go around, and you either have to seize it or hold onto it very aggressively. [ Reply | More ]

IMO closest to your 2d one. intense class anxiety (not totally baseless, given that many of our kids will not do as well as we have), plus a desire to think you can control everything. so you go nuts about getting your kid into the right preschool so she will go to an ivy and get a good job, even though thats not how it actually works. Dual citizen mom here (with one foot in Europe and the other in the States). IMO, it is 2 things. One is status-related. Our US society currently puts a lot of a value on individual success, and it is achieved (or believed to be achieved) through hard work (as opposed to something you are born into such as aristocracy... at least this is how the American myth goes). Getting your child into the "right" school is a marker of success as parents. It reflects well on your family and yourself. I feel that during the Cold War, the US was more invested in success as a society (we had to look noble, good and provide a good life for our citizens in our ideological fight against communism) and somewhere along the way, we became more individualistic. Schools themselves played into the "labels" with all their marketing and branding. The second IMO has to do with economics, the lack of a safety net, and the bifurcation between the very wealthy and the middle class. Being middle class in Western Europe typically means that you have access to a good education (including college and grad school) and healthcare for free, and a pension. Losing your job does not mean losing all these. Contrast this with middle class life in the US, where healthcare and college costs are out of control, real estate is more expensive in a good school district, child care is a challenge, and the measly benefits you get if you get laid off. The European side of my family is way less stressed than the US side (with equivalent levels of education and lower incomes). In order to avoid some of this stress, Americans want to position their kids for the top 0.1% or 1% and feel that having the "right" education and prestigious degrees on LinkedIn and the like will help for this. I think there is a lot of anxiety built into this. [ Reply | More ]

Obviously, it isn't any one thing and things that motivate one group don't necessarily motivate another - i.e., the wealthy see attending certain schools as a birthright and it used to function that way, while immigrants see it as a way out of poverty and middle class may see it as a way of providing the same or better opportunities for their children. Can’t they create a board under DC Urban called Urban Baby or Urban Moms? The problem with that board is that there are so many categories and I like being able to see what everyone is posting, even if it doesn’t pertain to me. For instance, I have a college kid but still am interested in posts about babies and young kids or K admissions. Also, while UB has a NY emphasis there are many of us not in NY. [ Reply | More ]

A couple of important things. I just read the FAQ on DCUM and it’s anonymous as long as you don’t login. If you do login and want to post anonymously, you have to wait 10 min to be sure that you are, in fact, anonymous. I could see myself screwing those up and dying of embarrassment. I bought the cutest mini crib that my large son slept in for 3 months. I thought he started waking because he'd roll over and get limbs struck in the sides (he didn't like the swaddle.) Spoiler, this isn't what woke him up. Then I bought a full sized crib that he maybe slept in 10 times total. We ended up co sleeping which gave us all the most amount of sleep. SO, my advice. Get a hand me down basinet at the beginning and then see what makes sense for your family. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Tell me about the river towns. Wanting more space and slower pace of life, but not a terrible commute into the city when needed (so they seem more appealing than NJ). Religion won't matter. Tarrytown and Dobb Ferry have some diversity. Hastings and Irvington are very white. Tarrytown is the biggest, most charming town center but the schools are the iffiest. Schools at the other 3 are great. They all have walkable town centers, but none of the primarily residential areas are very walkable in the Rivertowns because they are hilly and often lack sidewalks. The schools are NOT "iffie" in Tarrytown. They are mixed and that makes their stats lower. Why do people not understand this? If you want a white-bread town and high stats move to Irvington. If you want mixed and lower scores move to Tarrytown. It doesn't make the education any differnt. [ Reply | More ]

So basically you're saying that minorities bring stats down? If only the white kids from the town were in the schools, the stats would be higher? I don't like that implication at all. I would take Tarrytown and the diversity of its' schools over the other towns any day. Still, the school district and Tarrytown residents can and should strive to reach the same achievement level as neighboring towns. As an educator, I find an attitude of lowered expectations to be quite harmful. [ Reply | More ]

I was married for 2 yrs before getting pregnant and that time is really a blur. it wasn't an amazing time filled w travel and adventure. we were working and it was really the same as when we were dating (pre marriage). and think of it this way: it isn't like you and DH can travel the world right now before having a baby so it really is a good time to have a baby. stay hunkered down and nest etc. PS I too was 30 when pregnant w first and it was a nice age to have a baby. you won't feel rushed to have a second one since you are still young and can wait a few yrs. Your DH will feel very differently once baby arrives. Most DH act that way when there is a major change like new baby. My DH wasn't ready either bit then it just happens and you go w it [ Reply | More ]

This happened to us, except I was the one who wasn't ready. PG 6 months from our wedding. We were a little older than you (33) but DH was very eager and feared fertility problems because his sister had issues. I was miserable and sick being pregnant and very resentful but now I have an amazing 11 year old and wonderful 8 year old and wouldn't change anything. It was really hard at first though, both the pregnancy and caring for an infant. The truth is we may have had a third if we started earlier. It will be a blessing and you'll have more years with your child. It just takes some getting used to. [ Reply | More ]

I got pregnant on our honeymoon but we were going to start trying as I was 35 and my husband was 41. It would have been nice to have some more time but we had already been attached at the hip For three years prior. More than likely, if he wanted kids ultimately, he will get over it and get on bored. Point out that it will be great to be hitting 50 and getting a shot at another fun stage in your life. Also, it’s easier to deal w young kids when you have more energy. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I think it would be possible. DS is making that switch for HS and had all 7s on the ISEE. It's just not true that you need only 8s or 9s. 7s won't keep you out with good grades and recommendations and interview. [ Reply | More ]

The bigger question is why would you move? T2 privates have challenging curricula as you progress. [ Reply | More ]
