Tell me about the river towns. Wanting more space and slower pace of life, but not a terrible commute into the city when needed (so they seem more appealing than NJ). Looking for somewhere with great schools, walkability, welcoming to newcomers, diversity. Also, we are the opposite of religious if that matters. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Religion won't matter. Tarrytown and Dobb Ferry have some diversity. Hastings and Irvington are very white. Tarrytown is the biggest, most charming town center but the schools are the iffiest. Schools at the other 3 are great. They all have walkable town centers, but none of the primarily residential areas are very walkable in the Rivertowns because they are hilly and often lack sidewalks. Look closely at the Metro North schedules (if you can find a normal); Croton Harmon is a hub, so has most trains/expresses. [ Reply | More ]

The schools are NOT "iffie" in Tarrytown. They are mixed and that makes their stats lower. Why do people not understand this? If you want a white-bread town and high stats move to Irvington. If you want mixed and lower scores move to Tarrytown. It doesn't make the education any differnt. [ Reply | More ]

So basically you're saying that minorities bring stats down? If only the white kids from the town were in the schools, the stats would be higher? I don't like that implication at all. I would take Tarrytown and the diversity of its' schools over the other towns any day. Still, the school district and Tarrytown residents can and should strive to reach the same achievement level as neighboring towns. As an educator, I find an attitude of lowered expectations to be quite harmful. [ Reply | More ]

If you want walkable with a cute downtown then you would like Larchmont. [ Reply | More ]

You won't really get a slow pace of life in lower Westchester. All New Yorkers, still have that competitive, fast-pace, intense vibe under the veneer. [ Reply | More ]
