if that happens, they have to give preference to ps9 kids over others for their program. otherwise makes no sense for ps9. they need new blood and if there is going to be this sort of cooperation, it should go both ways. [ Reply | More ]

I don't want to start a big fight, but I am interested to know why the school might be against it (particularly if it works both ways). I always imagine the great hardship of having children in two different schools in NY. It seems sort of sad to me that a family might have to pass up a school like Anderson because their other child is in school in a different part of the city. [ Reply | More ]

That's not really what I was talking about. The majority of A families now come outside of D3 and therefore are not at all eligible for PS9 placement. I can't see DOE changing that. [ Reply | More ]

In the lower grades, which are the ones with eligible siblings. The older grades are more UWS/D3 centric, as the school's popularity outside of district shot up hugely once they opened their middle school. [ Reply | More ]

given that greatest number of high scorers come from D2/D3, and anderson is most geographically desirable for D3 kids, I predict that majority will come from there. the onsite was used to make it more diverse, but the scores and logistics will bring it to where it has always been [ Reply | More ]

No it is not. A never had a sibling preference so families going there knew exactly what they were getting into, and need to have planned for it. No need to screw D3 kids over this. [ Reply | More ]

But it will not go both ways. A is adamant about sibling preference undermining the school to begin with, they finally managed to get rid of the PS9 preference for MS a couple years ago and the last thing they want to do is to go back to that. [ Reply | More ]

Explain how it would work the other way in a way that would be equitable and wouldn't screw D3.Currently only some of A kids come from D3. Therefore if you only give D3 priority for 9 you are not giving equitable treatment to all A sibs. But if you open 9 to non D3 you are screwing D3 out of seats in their district program (the most desirable one too) [ Reply | More ]

^^Oops. Hit enter too soon. I think that it would be amazing for DOE to accommodate this type of situation. I do realize that there are families living in district 3 who need spaces for their children, but I suppose I can appreciate how difficult the decisions will be for the DOE. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.26.08, 08:07 PM Flag

All of this would be a lot easier to swallow if they hadn't gone down to 1 G&T class at 9. It is arguably the best G&T in district 3 and if they allow double sibling preference (A & 9) then they will be in a position of accepting only about 10 new families. To accommodate the A sibs they should go back to 2 G&Ts and then everyone will be happy. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.27.08, 05:57 AM Flag

Actually no, A would be very much up in the arms about 2 G&Ts at PS9 if it means losing space for specialty rooms, which would likely happen if not this year than next for sure. There is not enough space for all in the building. [ Reply | More ]

Then A families can't have their cake and eat it too. If the siblings did not qualify for Anderson even given the sibling preference then they need to step to the back of the line for 9 G&T just like everyone else. [ Reply | More ]

Fact of life is that in NYC many siblings attend different schools. Hunter has no sibling preference and most siblings go elsewhere. One kid qualifies for G&T another doesn't. Parents choose single sex private schools knowing they have kids of different genders, etc. Families need to work it out. It is nice the DOE is trying to accommodate most families, but how many exceptions should they be expected to make? [ Reply | More ]
