a lot of places in nyc are going to be mobbed today. we went to the CP zoo on saturday and its was insane -- the line for tickets looked like it was 30 minutes long (we have a membership). np - Funny, we never ever co-slept and DH hardly ever travels - but when he does, DD sometimes wakes up at 3 am and comes into my room. She would never do that if he were there, so it doesn't bother me, but I think it's funny that she has programmed herself to wake up in the middle of the night just because he's not home. if you have any room to walk in your apartment (which you obviously do) you can get one of the fold out childrens beds. Our friends did it for years. What? Every parent makes the decision as to how involved in homework they will be. It varies by household and by age. In practically every class in every school you will find a family that leaves it completely up to the child and one that does the reasearch and types the papers for the child. No such thing as "typical" [ Reply | More ]

NP, no, I would not worry if my child could not read by the end of K. I would think about it if my child could not read by the END of first. There are many ways to "help" a child. One being, you show them that reading is not the end all and be all of life. That everyone struggles with something at times in their life and that reading will come to them and there are some choices as to how best to make that happen. [ Reply | More ]

Depression is not "pain". It is a mental illness. I simply responded to what you wrote. And feelings of hopelessness are different from pain and depression. then it only makes sense for the schools and the parents to stop the pressure and understand that reading is not important in K (or even first grade for that matter). Children haven't changed. Crazed parents with unrealistic expectations have. There is nothing wrong with a child who cannot read in first grade and they shouldn't be treated as if there is. Problem solved. I'm not quite sure I understand what you are saying. Are parents with children who are slow readers only allowed to know something about the reading requirements in public schools? Or are they the only ones who are allowed to post the information they happen to know about reading thru t heir job or otherwise? I honetsly don't get your point? [ Reply | More ]

No, parents of slow readers are not the only ones allowed to know about reading requirements. Was that what I said? I can only think that you have a child who did not have a serious struggle because if you did you would be familiar with the requirements. [ Reply | More ]

I am familiar with the requirements. What makes you think I am not? Are you the mom with a child at a school that fails K students for not being able to read? Which one? [ Reply | More ]

You're a bully. There are moms who have had to struggle to help their kids and who have been upset by the retention letter. Have some feeling and stop insisting it doesn't happen to people. [ Reply | More ]

I've been watching this post, and you know what - I would like for the poster to say what school. I think when you come here and insist there is a rule that a child is held back in K if they can't read, you should be able to show some sort of back up. And so far, all the poster has done is avoid the issue. No one is a bully simply by asking her to name the school. That is outrageous. [ Reply | More ]

If you are talking about yourself, I am sincerely sorry your child struggled to read in K. But, I maintain, your child could not be held back for that reason alone. I don't know if you are the poster who mentioned speaking with the principal and social workers or not (I get confused trying to follow the new format), but social workers don't deal with reading issues. If they are brought it, it is for other issues as well. [ Reply | More ]

What does feeling have to do with it? She only asked you to say the school. Why are you refusing. It makes it look like you hedged a little. Why not just say it? You've got me curious and I don't care if my kid reads in K or not, lol [ Reply | More ]

In my dd's gen ed they are tested at the end of K for reading to pass to 1st. I forget what the test is called, but I do think all the schools do the same. Neighbors ds was retained in k last year for no reading at whatever level was expected of him. [ Reply | More ]

K is NOT required in NYC. Therefore, reading by the end of K is NOT a requirement to enter first grade. While your friends dc may have been held back - not reading was not the reason, no matter what she told you [ Reply | More ]

I guess you really think you are right, but there is a level of reading that is expected at the end of K. The fact that K is not required is not factored in once you are in the system. My friend didn't lie to me. [ Reply | More ]

I am correct. You are not held back from first grade based on not reading. It is not an opinion, it is a fact. A fact that is easily confirmed by anyone wishing to. [ Reply | More ]

You're not in my dd's school. They send a letter and I did read my neighbors letter. If you have not struggled with this you may not know about it, but it is true and there is a test at the end of K and the end of 1st. this is for zoned gen ed school. I can't speak for other schools. They takes this test in the beginning and end of every year. there is a letter that goes out to parents of kids who score too low at the end of the year. The letter is very clear. I've seen it. the real answer? How will you follow up? Your school really does not have the reading assesmant test? Post your school! what is your point anyway? That public schools don't push reading? That there are in fact no requirements before 2nd grade? Do you believe in the reading recovery program? Does that exist at your public? What is your point anyway? [ Reply | More ]

You are fudging. I will follow up by contacting the principal of the school and asking if a child is held back in K for the sole reason that they do not know how to read. Now, what school fails children for this reason alone? Why won't you answer? [ Reply | More ]

I'm going to answer the question you asked me, even tho you won't post the name of the school that you claim fails K students for reading. Yes, our K and first grade classes have assesments in reading. Not only at the end of the year, but throughout the year. My point is that you are stating incorrect information about nyc public school reading requirements for K students and I think parents should know the facts. Yes, public schools push reading early. No, you do not have to be reading to enter first grade (no matter what you say) in nyc public schools. Yes, I think reading recovery is a good thing if used properly. I also believe it is used to quick in many cases and if it is creating a problem for the child can be administered in a different setting than pullout during the school day. Yes, reading recovery exists at all nyc public schools mine included. And once again, my point is YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW HOW TO READ TO ENTER FIRST GRADE IN NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not answering because you are a bully. You want to be right and I have no idea why. I guess at your school you can pass to first and then to 2nd with no reading skill. You want me to be wrong more than you want readers to know the truth. [ Reply | More ]
