[ - ] Is helicopter mom insane? I just got the chance to read some of her drivel. And this is a quote from her introduction: "Downtown parents do not drill their kids on letter sounds. Uptown parents do." This is her reason why her son was the only kid in K (I assume at Lower Lab) who could not read. Discuss. 39 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

has never been a problem. Besides the fact that the kids spend already most of the day 5 times a week together (and thus have not much desire to have playdates) we do have playdates once in a while and usually meet half way at places like American Girl Place or FAO Schwarz or we go downtown or they come uptown. She was angry I think. She blamed other parents for her child delays. She seems to think that if all kids come in not reading to K and none of the parents tutor or drill, then the school will be forced to use better methods to teach all kids. It's obnoxious for her to asssume there's that difference between uptown and downtown. It's obnoxious to say that all the other kids were taught outside of school. I don't believe that at all. NP: Only a couple of kids in that class entered K knowing how to read. Most learned by end of K or first half of 1st. Hers was still not reading by middle of 1st grade. Most did fine with the balanced literacy stuff, but some kids (hers included) obviously can benefit from more explicit phonics. [ Reply | More ]

My child learned on his own entirely. Play based preschool with no reading instruction. He was exposed to lots of reading (of course) but just in me reading to him with no emphasis on the alphabet or sounding out. He picked it up by himself and many, many early readers are the same way. you should read mindless eating. the thing is if you buy those snacks, of course they will go first. but if you limit how much of that you keep in house, you will eat what's there. i was totally the same as you and we aren't insane about no sugar etc. but for meals, its all fresh. he eats pretzels and fig newtons, and loves popsicles (the normal sugary kind, no tofu pops). but for lunch and for dinner we eat real food. i think it has behavioral consequences as well putting all those chemicals in your body. i feel horrible when i eat like that now (though i'll still make a box of mac and eat half of it myself). i used to have reflux and that's gone now... a lot of this is very true for me. the only difference is that i don't usually buy processed foods for meals. we just end up eating a lot of scrambled eggs and quick easy foods like that. [ Reply | More ]

NP: This was not my experience. When my DD was that age, she caught everything imaginable at the playground during the summer: roseola, coxsackie, etc. Just saying. [ Reply | More ]

I'd give it until mid-summer. If she continues to be sick through June and early July, then I'd worry. Summer usually airs everything out and there is less illness. FWIW, my 3yo has had a cold for about a month and 3mos dd has caught it. This spring has been bad. [ Reply | More ]

we had this problem at different years for different kids. if it's just run of the mill stuff (colds, ear infections, etc) i wouldn't worry too much. if it went on to two winters of constant viruses, then i might start worrying mroe. [ Reply | More ]

he is an ass who doesn't care about the welfare of his family should he perish in an untimely fashion. He needs to get over himself. Take a policy out on him and schedule the medical appointment for the evening when he is home. [ Reply | More ]

is his reluctance just that he's procrastinating on paperwork? or does he have some more deep-seated objection (denial about mortality or whatever)? if I were you, I would do it all yourself, including filling out all the paperwork and just get him to sign it where he needs to. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Can I vent? BIL started dating new woman. I hold Memorial Day party every year. Dh has a big family so it's a bit of a potluck in that I provided all meat/grill and drinks and other people bring salads and dessert. BIL called and said his new gf loves to bake so she'd bring dessert. I said she only needed to bring one and other SIL would bring something, too. He said that she wanted to do it all. LOVES to bake. I reminded him to bring something kid-friendly since there are about 30 kids. They showed up yesterday empty-handed. New gf said "I got too busy at work, sorry." I told BIL he had to go to the store and get ice cream and popsicles for the kids. He said it would make his new gf "Feel bad" and he sat down. So, dh ran out and got the kids dessert. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
