anyone care to weigh in on my weight issues? i wear a size 16 (with some 18's and some 14's. depends a lot on the cut) and weigh close to 200 pounds. i'd really like to go down a complete size or even two sizes and generally get more fit. so my questions are: do you have any tips and how long do you think it'll take me to see results? tia. I don't know how long it will take and really you shouldn't worry about that either if you can help it. Just try changing 1 thing a week and lose it slowly. Maybe this week you would start walking. And then next week you can cut out sodas (diet ones too) Keep the changes and keep making them. In a couple of months you will be mich lighter and happier and healthier. Sounds like you haev a good attitude about it too. Focus on getting healthy and let your body weigh what it wants to [ Reply | More ]

I know! It's great when you start feeling your clothes get looser. Maybe you should concentrate on exercise and just eat healthy food. That will tone you up a lot. GL to you! [ Reply | More ]

I'm about the same--though I've moved pretty solidly from 16s to 18s since DCs. It's so hard to find time to exercise or cook healthy food. [ Reply | More ]

my schedule is changing soon and i want to use the change to implement some changes. in the past six years i've gained a net of almost 50 pounds. (a lot of ups and downs b/c of pregnancies and that it's hard to focus on eating well and exercising when you are overwhelmed by keepign your kids dressed and fed) [ Reply | More ]

how does cooking unhealthy food go faster? i never cooked until i had db and now he's 3, i cook dinner for us and it's so much easier than take out or cooking processed food. i've lost 20 lbs since making the switch. and i swear it doesn't take any longer. just use cookbooks, it makes a huge difference. Well, DS is an incredibly picky eater so we have a lot of pasta and chicken nuggets in our house. It's easier to just eat that than to cook something else. [ Reply | More ]

not op - but healthy food takes longer. it takes more planning, more grocery shopping more often, and more time to cook, at least if you want to stay away from processed foods. [ Reply | More ]

np it does at first but once you get into the habit, it really doesn't. I did that last summer and now don't even think to go to a box. Everything (well nearly everything) is cooked fresh. Just takes a little time to adjust [ Reply | More ]

That assumes you have time to go to the store to buy stuff fresh. I really don't. I do one big shop over the weekend. [ Reply | More ]

veggies will keep for a week though. If you live in the wilderness and go to town for supplies once a month I might buy your argument. A week is nothing [ Reply | More ]

ita. fresh foods go bad - processed foods do not. i'm all for fresh, whole foods, but it DOES take more work - no doubt about it. [ Reply | More ]

also once you have certain staples in the house, its much easier. we keep chicken/vegetable stock. i send recipes to myself via blackberry so i have them for shopping. i buy what i need and i waste a lot less food than the once a week shopping where i would overbuy and throw a lot out. even if he's eating chicken nuggets, you can make a quick salad. we're big on grilling two chicken breasts and making a big salad with cashews, diced cheese, veggies etc. its so good and so filling. takes about 20 mins to make inc chicken in grill pan. because cooking processed meals that are ready to go is easier than going to the grocery store, chopping stuff, fixing it, etc. [ Reply | More ]

not if you plan ahead just a little. You can even chop veggies etc on the weekend so all you haev to do is throw it together. Not that hard once you get into the habit [ Reply | More ]

i actually do this - i'm just saying that to say that real foods are easier is not really true. cooking healthy requires far more planning and foresight. [ Reply | More ]

I'm agreeing that it takes a little more planning and foresight. But once you get used to it, it's easy and so much better tasting and better for you ;-) [ Reply | More ]

anything from a box is so bad for you and for your kids. you're setting their eating habits too. it really isn't that much harder, if you want to do it. if you don't, i'm sure it seems like a huge hassle. i grew up eating from cans and boxes and want my kids to have better eating habits. my whole family was overweight. i was on that path until i had my son and changed my ways. it was a committment but now its second nature. op: i think some things are equally easy and some things are harder to cook healthy. buying fruits and vegetables takes more frequent store trips and actual food planning. (i can't tell you how many fruits and veg have rotted in my house. you buy some pretzels or crackers or potato chips and they last indefinitely). for me, it's the snacks that are easier to do unhealthy. and that the quick and easy meals are of medium nutritional value. I have found that if I prep fruits right when I get home from the store (wash the grapes and put them in a bowl etc) I am more likely to eat that when hungry than grab a bag of chips etc. [ Reply | More ]

that's a good idea. my dcs are now at the age where i'm coming up for air and i can try things like that. before this, things were really nuts. i had no idea what was in my fridge. perishables routinely spoiled. we ate scrambled eggs and mashed potatos a lot. it's not as easy to make fresh and healthy food most of the time. but it is workable when you get into a habit and you have the resources. op: thanks. we just recently bought some hummus. it's good. a slight problem is that one dc is allergic so i tend not to give it to dcs. but yes, there are alternatives. i'm trying to slowly change things, a few at a time. [ Reply | More ]

you should read mindless eating. the thing is if you buy those snacks, of course they will go first. but if you limit how much of that you keep in house, you will eat what's there. i was totally the same as you and we aren't insane about no sugar etc. but for meals, its all fresh. he eats pretzels and fig newtons, and loves popsicles (the normal sugary kind, no tofu pops). but for lunch and for dinner we eat real food. i think it has behavioral consequences as well putting all those chemicals in your body. i feel horrible when i eat like that now (though i'll still make a box of mac and eat half of it myself). i used to have reflux and that's gone now... a lot of this is very true for me. the only difference is that i don't usually buy processed foods for meals. we just end up eating a lot of scrambled eggs and quick easy foods like that. [ Reply | More ]
