There's a passport agency in Manhattan that might be able to ammend your passport same day. You've got to pay a lot of money and waste your whole day there, though. I think it's on Varrick St. near King? Something like that - near the Holland tunnel. [ Reply | More ]

Not OP here, but you don't have to CIO if you don't want to, and it's really hard with a 3-year-old. You can reason with a 3-year-old, offer rewards, try other things first. When this happened with my toddler we just set up a sticker system and it worked. Also try the No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. I know 4 boys at NEST. They are very "spirited" and active but they also LOVE to do workbooks and homework. NEST is fine for the active kid as long as they like to do a lot of written work (my ds doesn't like to do his 5 min homework assignment so NEST wouldn't have worked for us). He is doing fine at a district G&T [ Reply | More ]

My ds is finishing K at NEST. He is not "spirited." (His brother on the other hand...) My ds has plenty of friends who are spirited boys. I can't speak to their experience directly but I think that, like in any program, it is easier for the toe-the-line kids like my boy. NEST demands a lot and that can be hard for some kids. I think K at NEST is probably tougher for really spirited kids (boy or girl) BUT I think they are learning discipline they will need to learn either way -- especially if they are smart enough to have a spot in this year's class. (There is nothing worse than an undisciplined kid who is really smart.) [ Reply | More ]

op: Thanks. That's our quandry. DS definitely does need to be more self-disciplined, but I don't want his spirit to be completely squashed, either. He does like things like BrainQuest but does not seem that interested in workbooks at this point. For instance, I tried showing him a few pages of the KTSS, and after 1/2 a page, he had had enough. He does seem to do well in his pre-K, though. [ Reply | More ]

Growing up very poor in the US is very different than growing up very poor in the third world country. Clearly you've been able to improve your lot, something that just isn't possible for millions of people in their own countries. And those jobs? You think a lot of US citizens and residents are clamoring for food delivery jobs? slaughterhouse jobs? migrant worker jobs? dishwasher jobs? jobs that pay less than minimum wage? ha! the fact is that you and everyone in the US benefits every single day from the labour of out of status persons through the availability and low cost of goods and services. most homelessness is temporary and short-term and people can move on to do at least minimum wage work, many doing far more. long-term, sustained homelessness (the "begging on the street" guy you're probably thinking of) is primarily mental illness-related and I'm pretty sure picking strawberries for $2/hour isn't the best way to deal with that situation. [ - ] Think I've finally figured it out. When Obama supporting bloggers say that Clinton should withdraw from the race for the good of the party, they mean she should stop reminding them that fifteen million Democrats don't think Barack Obama is as wonderful as they think he is. All those Democratic votes for Hillary force them to consider the possibility that they're not as smart and as hip and as on to a sure thing as their vanity has been assuring them they are. If my guy is as wonderful is I think he is, then why doesn't everybody else know it? Why hasn't he just run away with the nomination? Can it be that my guy isn't that wonderful? Can it be that I'm not as smart and as hip and as on to a sure thing as I know I must be? Can it be that I'm....gulp...wrong? NO WAY! It must be something else. It must be a trick. It must be that those fifteen million people voting for Hillary are crazy or stupid or racist or otherwise not as smart and hip and cool as I am. Otherwise they would know what I know. Otherwise they would see what I see. They would know how wonderful my wonderful candidate is. They would see how awful their awful candidate is. They wouldn't vote for that horrible, horrible woman then. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

And since if they did know what I know and did see what I see they wouldn't vote for that horrible, horrible woman, then their votes are the products of a giant con. They are the votes of suckers and chumps. The votes of suckers and chumps shouldn't count. They don't count! The votes of fifteen million suckers and chumps---fifteen million racist and stupid suckers and chumps---are NOT as important, are not as real, as the votes of sixteen million geniuses and hipsters like me. Hillary has no real support. The fact that she refuses to admit this means that she's either stupid or blinded by ego and ambition or just plain malicious and wants to pull the party down into the fires of Mount Doom with her! The fact that she's still in it, still at it, must mean that she doesn't mind making suckers and chumps out of so many people I used to think were intelligent and decent and fair-minded---why some of them even used to be as smart and as cool as I am! This proves it. She's stupid. She's an egomaniac. She's insanely ambitious. She's a con artist. She's a horrible, horrible human being. And aren't I smart and hip for being the only person brilliant enough to notice this and the only blogger bold enough to say so? [ Reply | More ]
