for $$ not to be an issue for me this means that we have so much $$ for college, grad school, retirement, nest egg, dream job if it means a pay cut - - -then private. Otherwise, unless the kid has a special need, and if it is a very good public, then i would pick public [ Reply | More ]

in my experience this for money not to be an issue really depends on the feelings of the family - their relationship with $$ and not how much they actually have (i know some people who do private and are only a "little" in debt and families who do public and have tons but are very very conservative financially) [ Reply | More ]

dh and I both went to privates. i think private has a lot of advantages that I want for dc (too many and too varied to list). our public school was good but our private was GREAT. That said it has to be the right private school for your child. they aren't all created equal. [ Reply | More ]

it entirely depends on the school. we've had dc's in private schools that we've loved and private schools that we hated. Ditto public schools. For the most part, in the private schools, we were surrounded by parents we did not fit with because they were all richer than us. In the publics we had to deal with a system we did not fit with because it is run by people dumber than us. It's difficult both ways. [ Reply | More ]

My child is in an independent school that has been great for her. I also like that the school goes for 10 years, and she doesn't have to face the fragmentation of changing schools for middle school. I think you really start to see major differences between public and private by 4th grade. It makes sense to talk about schools with parents of older kids, in my opinion. [ Reply | More ]

or. no, i felt that way for most of my life and i always tried to be the "bigger person" and turn the other cheek and all that. plus, i just felt terrible that there actions made it look like they didn't like me and these actions were sometimes public and it was embarrassing to feel like my parents didn't like me. but i was in therapy and my therapist, sort of playing devil's advocate, was saying "well, why do you still speak to them" and i'd say "because they're my family...." and he would say "so?" and on and on and finally i came to terms with it...they DON'T like me, they want to hurt my family. I felt so guilty. But now I am so much better off [ Reply | More ]

You can ask for references. Some tutors lose students b/c they "age out" (so the family will talk to you and is happy to share). The person who I'm thinking of is great -- and probably does have references. [ Reply | More ]

DH is from abroad, so probably abroad. Otherwise, East Hampton or Spring Lake, NJ. DH way prefers Spring Lake - you really use the beach, plus my family is in NJ and we always have family stuff but we could still use our house. If my price point was lower maybe Ocean Grove, NJ (it's a little weird). Otherwise maybe Katonah (I know it's a suburb!), Rhinebeck or Cold Spring since they aren't that isolated. [ Reply | More ]
