depends on the public. ds is in a public magnet along with dcs who could easily afford private..as in yachts/private planes $$$ and still they choose the magnet public. [ Reply | More ]

depends on both the public and private. dc is in a private which we love, but we looked at a bunch where I would never send dc. we liked our local public, but we toured others like Nest where I would never send dc (at least for elem) [ Reply | More ]

for $$ not to be an issue for me this means that we have so much $$ for college, grad school, retirement, nest egg, dream job if it means a pay cut - - -then private. Otherwise, unless the kid has a special need, and if it is a very good public, then i would pick public [ Reply | More ]

Looked at both, witdrew apps from private, happy in public. And money can't ever be "not an issue". But, some people who could afford tuition choose public [ Reply | More ]

Two things, when someone says "trust me" - never do it. Trustworthy people don't say that. And people with truck loads of money make an issue out of money :) [ Reply | More ]

OK then, don't trust me. I'm sure you're right, that the likes of Brangelina and Rupert Murdoch are sweating their dc's private school tuitions. [ Reply | More ]

poster didn't say "sweating", she said money wasn't an issue. I'm pointing out to you that money is always an issue, if you have it or not. Its money. But no matter. [ Reply | More ]

Not true. Plenty of people don't give one thought to the cost of private school. It just does not register. [ Reply | More ]

I think the point is for people who are extremely wealthy, money is truly not an issue when deciding whether to pay for private school. It's not something that registers as AT ALL a factor in the decision making process. [ Reply | More ]

but like above poster said, rich people want their dc to go to school with other rich people and that in itself makes money an issue in the decision. I get it. [ Reply | More ]

in my experience this for money not to be an issue really depends on the feelings of the family - their relationship with $$ and not how much they actually have (i know some people who do private and are only a "little" in debt and families who do public and have tons but are very very conservative financially) [ Reply | More ]

ditto. why tho? is it because you're not zoned for a good public? or you didn't think the education was up to par? [ Reply | More ]

dh and I both went to privates. i think private has a lot of advantages that I want for dc (too many and too varied to list). our public school was good but our private was GREAT. That said it has to be the right private school for your child. they aren't all created equal. [ Reply | More ]

np: ditto. because I was gifted and felt public let me down. hoping private will be better for dc who is also gifter. [ Reply | More ]

depends on the specific public and private, depends on how you feel about money and savings, depends on what your experience with education has been, depends on the needs of your particular child, depends, depends, depends [ Reply | More ]

it entirely depends on the school. we've had dc's in private schools that we've loved and private schools that we hated. Ditto public schools. For the most part, in the private schools, we were surrounded by parents we did not fit with because they were all richer than us. In the publics we had to deal with a system we did not fit with because it is run by people dumber than us. It's difficult both ways. [ Reply | More ]

My child is in an independent school that has been great for her. I also like that the school goes for 10 years, and she doesn't have to face the fragmentation of changing schools for middle school. I think you really start to see major differences between public and private by 4th grade. It makes sense to talk about schools with parents of older kids, in my opinion. [ Reply | More ]

Why not choose a school that goes from K-12 then? And would you feel differently if the public school was a K-8 or a K-12? [ Reply | More ]

depends on the public. anderson or hunter over any private school. most other privates over any other public school. i like a school that goes at least through 8th grade, so that's a very important factor. no to nest under any circumstances. [ Reply | More ]
