[ - ] I'm organizing a good friend's bday dinner. She originally told me she only wanted three other couples. I ran some other names by her and she said "no" to them. So, then her DH got involved and the group got bigger. Today the bday girl told me that she told a friend she was suprised I hadn't called her yet b/c she was supposed to be invited. Only - she had specifically told me she did NOT want to invite this friend. Which means I have to call this person who is VERY sensitive and act like it was my mistake. Any ideas on how to phrase it so I don't look like a jerk? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

this is the formulation of an old anti-nausea pregnacny medicine called Bendectin which was pulled from the market amidst frivolous law suits. Worked like a charm for my mom who was incredibly sick while pregnant with all four of us. I have also heard b12 and benadryl as a similar home gronw formulation. I think it's ok to send a 'light' email asking if they know yet if they are coming. Usually if people don't reply right away they forget to reply altogether. Unless, of course, they are waiting to find out if they are free (don't have to work, stuff like that). [ Reply | More ]

send out an email saying whoops! forgot to ask for an rsvp - are you coming? but fwiw, i hate getting invites a month before a party. it's a kid's party - it's not the social event of the season, you know? it shouldn't be considered this huge deal, imo. also - it is so typical that people don't rsvp to kid's parties at all so plan your party favors and things accordingly. I gotta say that I disagree. I think it's kinda rude not to send out invites ahead of time. My SIL used to wait until the last minute to tell us when she was having my neice's birthday parties and then was shocked when half of us couldn't come. My policy is first come, first served (unless it's something really big). If I made plans with friends, I'm not going to blow them off because my SIL can't get it together. She has since learned... And I also think it's rude not to RSVP. If you don't care about getting them then don't ask, but if there's a reponse request on the invite it's polite to reply. How hard is it to make a quick call/send an email? [ Reply | More ]

or: i, too, think it's rude not to rsvp but i've learned not to expect it. and, quite frankly, no matter how early i receive a bday party invite, i will change my rsvp if something more important comes up. i just think people are way too wrapped up in their 3 y.o.'s parties these days. i make sure my party favors are something i can use somehow and have extras. it just shouldn't be that big of a deal. Send an email. I'm used to receiving up to three emails regarding party attendance; I find them enjoyable to read. My social group is notoriously bad at sending RSVP responses, so I myself also tend to send out as many emails as I please. It never affects the turn-out and I usually have a pretty good idea of how many people to expect. Really, though, if someone is too lazy to RSVP then either don't invite them next time. If they ask why explain, "You didn't RSVP last time so I thought you wouldn't want to come to this one, either." And then laugh, with an evil glittering of your eyes, and flap your cape and fly away! [ - ] Hi all. Does anyone remember me?, I'm the one who drove her dear friend to detox about 3 weeks ago. She stopped by my house the day after getting out of detox (NOT the same as rehab - she was in detox for 5 days only) and I smelled alcohol on her breath. Confronted her about it and she said she hadn't been drinking. I didn't believe her but she swore up & down, even saying she was hurt that I had thought that - so, finally, I was like "if you say you're not lying then, ok, I believe you." She started going to an out-patient rehab, daily, as well as doing an additional AA meeting every day. She told everyone, including her therapist and the folks in her AA meetings, that she was sober and had "x" amount of days. Guess what? She just called to tell me she started drinking as soon as she got home from detox (3 weeks ago) and had been lying to everyone since then. I am SO proud of her for telling the truth, finally, because I - at least - KNEW (although it was nothing I could prove) she had started drinking again. Just goes to prove the saying: "How can you tell when an alcoholic is lying? - Because their lips are moving." Her sobriety (or lack thereof) is HER CHOICE but d*mn it, just don't f*cking lie to me, you know??! 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

She sat there, for weeks, and lied - with a poker face - to me and our other dear friend (the friend that drove her up to detox with me). I'm happy she's finally telling the truth (because I knew, in my heart, she was lying all along) but, d*mn, I'll NEVER be able to trust her again, will I? [ Reply | More ]

When she gets and stays sober for an extended period of time, yes, you will. But not until then. Until then, you have to know that - at any given moment - you are talking to two people within her. One wants to get sober and healthy. The other wants to do and say anything to get you off her back so she can get to the alcohol. [ Reply | More ]

OP: thanks - the thing about her is that she'll tell anyone who'll listen that she DOESN'T want to be sober - but, when I was on the phone with her just now, I asked her if she was sober and she said, "yes, in this minute." I asked her if she WANTED to be sober and she said, "yes, in this minute I do." So - who knows?, it's a process and perhaps one day she'll be able to (honestly) say, "Hi, My name is Jane and I'm an alcoholic. And I have 3 years." ?? Time will tell. [ Reply | More ]

If you "play around" with same sex partners then you're probably bi. There is love, sex, love & sex, hate & sex, and all manner in between. I've hated men I've had sex with. I've romantically loved women I haven't had sex with. I've had sex with both men and women, then been indifferent to them. So, you know. Do you believe in fairies? [ Reply | More ]

Agreed. If a man enjoys sex with both men and women than he is bi. I think where the problem lies is that a bi man in a straight relationship is less likely to be able to act on his desire to be with men whereas a bi man in a straight relationship may have a lot more leeway in being with women. Plus, once a man has been in a gay relationship, people see him as gay. Whereas a woman who has been in a gay relationship is not seen that way necessarily - think Anne Heche. [ Reply | More ]
