my first went into a regular bed at 3, no problems at all. my second went into a toddler bed just shy of 2, after a couple of scary falls from the crib. it was a rough couple of weeks of her getting up constantly, but now she has settled down andis fine [ Reply | More ]

We moved ds to a toddler bed at 17mo and put the crib mattress onto the floor next to the bed (he did fall onto it twice). We put a gate on the door of his room. It took a few weeks for him to regularly sleep in the bed rather than in his chair but he got used to it eventually. [ Reply | More ]

Had a toddler bed. We found that a set routine at night was key: bath, snack, stories, song. We switched to the bed when potty training was well underway. Some mornings ds still "calls" to be gotten out of bed-so cute:) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] What are ways a shy teen can develop confidence at her last year of sleepaway camp? She's such a late bloomer that it's difficult for her at an all-girls' school, where there's lots of competition and everything feels like a race. I'd like to give her some well-chosen words before she gets on the bus to go up to Maine but at this point, I've run out of words - any suggestions? She's such a great young woman but she's often unhappy. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

of course not. annoying nyc moms ship off their kids because they believe that in general it is good for them. it is weird, and it doesn't seem to matter whether the kid wants it or not. [ Reply | More ]

i'd rethink your strategy for her school and her camp. seriously. if her mom can't protect her and put her into situations that make her happy and confident, I hope at least you have a good therapist for helping her deal with these stressors. I understand you can't protect your kids all the time, but I'd find other ways to entertain her that draw her out instead of hoping she blooms in stressful competitive situations [ Reply | More ]

everyone faces tough situations-parents can't protect kids all the time but there is a fine line between having a stressful situation here and there vs everything is stressful for your kid. [ Reply | More ]

No - one of the smaller girls' schools. In Lower school, it seemed cozy and nurturing. But in Middle and Upper, things changed. It's claustrophobic, but the academics are so good and dd is doing so well that it would be a mistake to move her (not that there's any place better where she could go). The issue we have is social - some kids just get buried socially - it could be due to something they said or someone "said" they said, and it escalates until one's reputation is damaged or destroyed as only adolescent girls can do it. So camp is a breather, and a time to blossom, hopefully. That's why I asked for advice in the beginning of the thread. [ Reply | More ]

(sigh). Did you just start using UB? You can watch posts of course but there is no easy way to tell if there are new replies to a watched post. You have to scan through and just try to see if there are any new ones. MUCH better the old way, when you click it and it fades so you know if you already read it and you can instantly see if there is a new reply on a thread. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am expecting and will more than likely move within Manhattan in the next 6 months - 1 year. I'd like to start learning more about local schools (private / public), as that may influence the neighborhood we select. Are there any books / websites / other resources that detail all the schooling options? And give some idea what each one offers? 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You should absolutely positively rent first. So it won't matter. Then you will have time to find out where you like and what the schools are like. Schools change in five years. Its too soon to buy based on school [ Reply | More ]

You need to be careful. The DOE is discussing rezoning schools. Six years is a long time. I would not buy specifically for a school so far away from K entry. If you want to buy, buy - but realize that the schools may be different when its your unborn childs time to register. [ Reply | More ]

Blackboard awards gives out information about diversity, tuition, % on FA, etc. Private schools don't take these terrible state tests and I don't know of anywhere they post the results of the tests they do give. You can look on individual school websites for college placement. But for private schools it really is about the right "fit" for your dc and family. Despite UB lore most private schools in NYC are excellent. [ Reply | More ]

either live on the UES or on the UWS in the 60's or 70's where you are zoned for 87 or 199. The three public schools are ps 6 (east side) ps 87 and ps 199 (west side). Also check out Lower Lab downtown. That's all. [ Reply | More ]

For NYC public schools, check out www.indsideschools.org - they have extensive reviews of every single public school, including test scores, population etc. They also sell the "Best public schools" books on the website. There is also a discussion forum there where you can get information from other parents. [ Reply | More ]

So true. Just because you have money, doesn't mean you'll get into a private school. We love the Village: Public Schools 41 & 3; Private: Little Red School House & Friend Seminary. But of course, living in the Village often means a smaller apartment. [ Reply | More ]

Privates: getting into UB7 Top Tier (Dalton, Collegiate, Chapin, Trinity, Horance Mann, Spence and Brearley) is very, very, very hard. Getting into 2nd tier (St Anns, Nightingale, St Bernards) is very, very hard. If you are not from here, you have no idea how much work you have to put in. Public: you can try for gifted schools like Hunter or Anderson or Nest but these are also very, very, very hard. Best bet is move into good zoned public school like PS6 or PS199 or PS87 (though it's very, very expensive to live in those zones) or try for district G&T which is easier. [ Reply | More ]
