I am expecting and will more than likely move within Manhattan in the next 6 months - 1 year. I'd like to start learning more about local schools (private / public), as that may influence the neighborhood we select. Are there any books / websites / other resources that detail all the schooling options? And give some idea what each one offers? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I am expecting with #1 - so I realize I'm getting a little ahead of myself - but very curious. Would rather go into the apartment search with some idea of the schools in each area we look. [ Reply | More ]

You should absolutely positively rent first. So it won't matter. Then you will have time to find out where you like and what the schools are like. Schools change in five years. Its too soon to buy based on school [ Reply | More ]

I would NEVER buy based on the school alone - I just wanted to start researching. Forget about the buying aspect - any resources out there that talk about diffent nursery schools? How do you start your research? [ Reply | More ]

I thought you were talking about elementary schools. If while you are pregnant with your first, you would like to read about some nyc private preschools, there is a book. Check amazon. NYC guide to private preschools. [ Reply | More ]

You need to be careful. The DOE is discussing rezoning schools. Six years is a long time. I would not buy specifically for a school so far away from K entry. If you want to buy, buy - but realize that the schools may be different when its your unborn childs time to register. [ Reply | More ]

If you can afford private I'd just move to the neighborhood you like. If you want public look for the school with the highest scores and the least amount of crowding. [ Reply | More ]

Blackboard awards gives out information about diversity, tuition, % on FA, etc. Private schools don't take these terrible state tests and I don't know of anywhere they post the results of the tests they do give. You can look on individual school websites for college placement. But for private schools it really is about the right "fit" for your dc and family. Despite UB lore most private schools in NYC are excellent. [ Reply | More ]

either live on the UES or on the UWS in the 60's or 70's where you are zoned for 87 or 199. The three public schools are ps 6 (east side) ps 87 and ps 199 (west side). Also check out Lower Lab downtown. That's all. [ Reply | More ]

For NYC public schools, check out www.indsideschools.org - they have extensive reviews of every single public school, including test scores, population etc. They also sell the "Best public schools" books on the website. There is also a discussion forum there where you can get information from other parents. [ Reply | More ]

Even if you can afford private school, it's good idea to be living in a decent school zone by the time your child is 4 or so--as a backup. [ Reply | More ]

So true. Just because you have money, doesn't mean you'll get into a private school. We love the Village: Public Schools 41 & 3; Private: Little Red School House & Friend Seminary. But of course, living in the Village often means a smaller apartment. [ Reply | More ]

^^Oh, and it looks like a new school will be built. So the PS schools are a little crowded now, but there is relief in sight. [ Reply | More ]

Privates: getting into UB7 Top Tier (Dalton, Collegiate, Chapin, Trinity, Horance Mann, Spence and Brearley) is very, very, very hard. Getting into 2nd tier (St Anns, Nightingale, St Bernards) is very, very hard. If you are not from here, you have no idea how much work you have to put in. Public: you can try for gifted schools like Hunter or Anderson or Nest but these are also very, very, very hard. Best bet is move into good zoned public school like PS6 or PS199 or PS87 (though it's very, very expensive to live in those zones) or try for district G&T which is easier. [ Reply | More ]

Yeap. Don't move to Manhattan for the schools. The system is crazy--especially when you get to middle school. We've even discussed home schooling if ds doesn't get into a G&T or magnet school. Have you considered boarding school? (ha!) [ Reply | More ]
