[ - ] Thinking of moving to Chappaqua. We can get a great house and distance to NYC not an issue for us, but I can't help but thinking that I will be so much further away from everything than southern Westchester because it seems so bucolic/less developed. My dh thinks I am nuts and says equidistant to N. White Plains and Greensich v. alot of southern Westchester. Am I out of it? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Everything is so spread out up there. I feel like there are more things to do in Lower Westchester. We both stayed home and I've made more friends with kids in the same amount of time. Look online and check out activities and stuff you would do in each location. [ Reply | More ]

Someone told me that Larchmont elementary is great, but that I might not want to send my daughter to Mammoroneck HS, because some think not as good. Mamaroneck High School is a great school and the kids there get a great education and many go on to top colleges like Harvard. It is just not 100% white or mostly white with a high percantage of asians who are typically very focused on their kids getting high scores in academics (nothing wrong with that mind you). It is a very balanced school, enough suppor for kids to excel but not a pressure cooker. [ Reply | More ]

I have heard both sides. More diverse for certain than Scarsdale or Rye. Probably on par with New Rochelle. Worry about it when you get there. Personally I think Rye Country Day School is not such a good school. [ Reply | More ]

Definitely not on par with New Rochelle or even close. Mamaroneck is 78.4% white, 4.5 % black, 13.8 % Hispanic and 3.4% Asian. New Rochelle is 44.1% White, 27.6% black, 24.6% Hispanic, 3.5% Asian and .1% Native American. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's the kind of school where a smart motivated kid will get a great education. But I kid that can fall through the cracks, may well fall through the cracks, or a kid that's not motivated may find himself attracted to a crowd where going to college isn't assumed. I wouldn't worry about that at this stage b/c there is no way you will know what kind of kid you will have. [ Reply | More ]

I went to Mam'k Schools and now back in Larchmont as an adult. I think the post about falling through the cracks is relevant. Mam'k was great (and i heard this is still the case) if you were a top student or needed help. Many kids go to top schools, first school system to offer Mandarin. Not a lot of hand holding - helps to be self directed. [ Reply | More ]

Please call the DOE and say something. The best way to improve this process is if they're held accountable for the screw-ups, but for that they need to know about their mistakes or if people are gaming the system (if the out-of-zone people lied about their address). [ Reply | More ]

You need to report this & appeal. Call the school (parent coordinator). They screwed up the whole process tis year all over the city -- it has been on TV & in every paper. Look on the DOE site & Inside Schools on how to appeal. One of my twins got rejected for PreK at our school where my older daughter attends. Unless you tell them what is going on though, they won't be able to help you. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Have not yet planned anything for DS's birthday which is in July. He'll be 5 and is expecting a big party like he has had in previous years and like the many he attends all year long. I'm not playing the game this year and did not reserve a space at a gym or anything like that. We're short on money and frankly I think it's ridiculous. But given that, what can we do that he'll still enjoy? Our apt. is too small to host and mid-July tends to be scorching outside. I was thinking of just an ice-cream party at Baskin Robbins but how can I work in his preferred "power rangers" theme and make it seem legit? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My 4yo is obsessed with Dora, so we made a Dora pinata together. It was a big hit--both to make and then for the kids to bash open and get goodies. Cost pretty much nothing--some tempera paint and crepe paper, since we had flour, old newspapers and a ballloon. Also, it was fun to do with DD. You could do a Power Ranger pinata. [ Reply | More ]
