Have not yet planned anything for DS's birthday which is in July. He'll be 5 and is expecting a big party like he has had in previous years and like the many he attends all year long. I'm not playing the game this year and did not reserve a space at a gym or anything like that. We're short on money and frankly I think it's ridiculous. But given that, what can we do that he'll still enjoy? Our apt. is too small to host and mid-July tends to be scorching outside. I was thinking of just an ice-cream party at Baskin Robbins but how can I work in his preferred "power rangers" theme and make it seem legit? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My 4yo is obsessed with Dora, so we made a Dora pinata together. It was a big hit--both to make and then for the kids to bash open and get goodies. Cost pretty much nothing--some tempera paint and crepe paper, since we had flour, old newspapers and a ballloon. Also, it was fun to do with DD. You could do a Power Ranger pinata. [ Reply | More ]

you could also do a park. kids can run around and be power rangers, you give them cake, then they go home. [ Reply | More ]

You would be surprised what happens if you say that this year you are going to have a family celebration and a great toy instead of a party. I have had years with parties and years without and every year my kids have a great time. Try it and see. [ Reply | More ]

my dd has a july birthday as well--we took one friend with us up to rye playland for the afternoon, rode the kiddie rides, had ice cream. it was great, and she had a blast. [ Reply | More ]

Pizza Uno is very affordable (like $15 per kid I think). They make their own pizzas and then make their own ice cream sundays. You just need some activities for the time the pizza is cooking. [ Reply | More ]
