Larchmont moms: Thinking about moving to Larchmont. Someone told me that Larchmont elementary is great, but that I might not want to send my daughter to Mammoroneck HS, because some think not as good. I know a bunch of people who send their kids there. What do you think? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Mamaroneck High School is a great school and the kids there get a great education and many go on to top colleges like Harvard. It is just not 100% white or mostly white with a high percantage of asians who are typically very focused on their kids getting high scores in academics (nothing wrong with that mind you). It is a very balanced school, enough suppor for kids to excel but not a pressure cooker. [ Reply | More ]

I have heard both sides. More diverse for certain than Scarsdale or Rye. Probably on par with New Rochelle. Worry about it when you get there. Personally I think Rye Country Day School is not such a good school. [ Reply | More ]

Definitely not on par with New Rochelle or even close. Mamaroneck is 78.4% white, 4.5 % black, 13.8 % Hispanic and 3.4% Asian. New Rochelle is 44.1% White, 27.6% black, 24.6% Hispanic, 3.5% Asian and .1% Native American. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's the kind of school where a smart motivated kid will get a great education. But I kid that can fall through the cracks, may well fall through the cracks, or a kid that's not motivated may find himself attracted to a crowd where going to college isn't assumed. I wouldn't worry about that at this stage b/c there is no way you will know what kind of kid you will have. [ Reply | More ]

I went to Mam'k Schools and now back in Larchmont as an adult. I think the post about falling through the cracks is relevant. Mam'k was great (and i heard this is still the case) if you were a top student or needed help. Many kids go to top schools, first school system to offer Mandarin. Not a lot of hand holding - helps to be self directed. [ Reply | More ]
