We underestimated the toll the commute would take on us. We idealized. In reality, when we factored in the drive to the train station, the train to Penn Station, the subway, and the walk to our office, it was 2.5 to 3.0 hours a day of travel time. 3 hours on top of a 12 hour work day meant that we never saw our dc and had to hire a second nanny! It was a disaster. [ Reply | More ]

Crazy!!! I would never want to leave the city but if I did make a move it would be to make my life eaiser, not more difficult. Have you ever sat in rush hour traffic from the burbs at 8:00am. Plan on that 1/2 hour trip taking an 1 1/2 hours. Plus what is the point of moving if your dc will not meet other dc. All their friends will still be in the city and you will be very isolated there without some kind of connection to the community [ Reply | More ]

We moved 2 yrs ago for more space. LOVE that we have visitors right now and there isn't stuff all over the apartment. HATE HATE driving though. Biggest drawback for me. Also, we deliberately didn't buy a house near the train. Big mistake - if I could just walk to the train station, I'd be in the city a lot more than now. We're only a few miles, but it still means finding a spot etc. Also, the responsibilities when you have a house are enormous. There's just so much a super does that you just don't realize until you do it all. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Hi NYC parents! Are families in the city tutoring over the summer to get an "edge" on the next school year? What happened to an unstructured summer?! 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

An unstructured summer is not really an option for most parents who work, and have to fill the summer with structured activities when school and after-school care is not in session. But this is nothing new. I went to camp and summer programs, as did my mother, and my grandparents actually met while working at a summer camp. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I wasn't criticizing camp. I was just stunned to learn that many of the parents at my school are engaging reading and math tutors for the summer not for remediation, but to be ahead at least a grade level when school starts. At first I thought it was the parent population in my city (two tt colleges), but it turns out people in public in the suburbs are also tutoring - feels a bit like an arms race! [ Reply | More ]

So it isn't structure you object to, but tutoring. Personally, I feel that if you are going to fill a child's summer with activities, there is nothing wrong with adding some balance and having academic activities as well as social, cultural, athletic, and leisure activities. [ Reply | More ]

It is insane. Typical ny. I don't know where or how most of the posters on UB grew up, but I grew up in middle class suburbia - and no one would have ever considered tutoring during summer break. Oddly enough, I was at the top of my class at the end of the year, and the top of my class at the beginning. I didn't "lose" anything. Give these children a break. They need to bored and inventive, they need to chill and just relax, process. I understand if both parents work you need childcare, but that has nothing to do with academic work over the summer [ Reply | More ]
