They will be making a 3-hour commute to the best school in the whole world. Far better than that other school. They will socialize only with other geniuses of their caliber and will not ever be bored. Their parents will force the PA (which they will not join) to pay for TAs in their classrooms. They will also force the PA to create a uniform rule, where all children will wear personalized T-shirts with their scores so they can be properly handled according to their respective genius. As a class, they will cure AIDS by September, solve world hunger by October, and create world peace by November. However, their mothers will continue bickering, on a larger and larger scale, and therefore will create a failure of the world peace by December. It's all downhill from there. [ Reply | More ]

I went to an Ivy and heard that children/grandchildren of some of the major contributors (i.e. with several buildings named after them) did not necessarily get in anymore based on legacy. Children who are accepted to Ivies have good scores/grades but also show potential to be *leaders* - that's really what they look for, leadership potential. Which has zero to do with what high school the child attends. Ivies also like diversity, which is why a midwestern public school student who is an activist and leader in their community with excellent grades will always get in over a rich child from NYC with fine grades, a few extra currics and nothing else to distinguish them. Sometimes an extraordinary athlete might be recruited, but only if they have the academic chops to handle the school. Very nice to give back to your alma mater, though, if you can afford to. As cold-blooded as this sounds, it's not a completely insane idea. There's a book out there by a former admissions officer that discusses this and it basically says that there are two categories of legacies that get a little more of a look than the typical legacy - people who contribute a lot of $$$ and people who have been loyal supporters for a very long time and also active in other ways. So apparently, schools do at least look at length of support, not just amount. Having said that, this provides only a slight edge, and I wouldn't be ordering any Yale parent sweatshirts now. former college admissions person here (seven sisters school)....the contribution won't help (unless it is really a doozy) but the legacy status might a little bit -- but only if the kid is on the margins...for example, it might get him a wait-list if otherwise a rejection....or could move from wait-list to accept....but the kid must have the qualifications for admission him/herself...in my experience it was really really rare for legacy status or contributions to make a difference in the admissions decision [ Reply | More ]

The difference is that at some of the very top tt schools, 10% or more of the kids go to HYP. At another school, top 10% wouldn't cut it. I still think we're talking about A-range grades (unless you're a special exception for one reason or another). [ Reply | More ]

They want the top students from NYC (top students at top tier schools), and then want geographic diversification away from New York. I don't think it does kids any favors for them to be in a non-TT school in the city - better to move west or abroad. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.24.08, 04:32 PM Flag

I think if you're coming from either TT or lower tier private in NY, you have to have the grades, and I mean A's, not B's. After that, I think there's probably a second cut, where the top students at the TT have a strong shot at getting in and a top student at a lower tier may or may not, depending on their underlying caliber as judged by other things - recommendations, SATs, essays, extracurriculars, etc. If you look at the "3rd and 4th tier" schools, they all get some students in to top schools some years, they just don't get as many in or as regularly. (But, of course, that's b/c the TT cherry-pick the smartest and most driven students, esp. with their high school admissions.) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My SIL who I've posted about before (she's supported by DH's parents, who are old and my FIL is very ill, she is a psychologist but doesn't work fulltime and her DH didn't finish college and is currently employed installing cable), just announced that she and her DH are going to try for #1. Considering that her parents give her several thousand dollars a month, MIL was their first db's "nanny" for the first year of its life, now pays for daycare, and they live ridiculously extravagently for people who make no money, I can barely contain myself. I understand they want to have a second kid, but seriously, they need to put themselves together before it happens. Ok, but this school's name is messed up half the time it's posted. Brearly, Brearley, etc. etc. by people dying to send their dds there. It is pretty funny actually. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I have absolutely NO plans to make good friends with other moms at ongoing. I mean, I will chitchat at school functions and volunteer together as needed, but I already have my best friends and am not looking to make bosom friends. Just acquaintances to make small talks with and talk about school stuff with. Am I going to be perceived as anti-social? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I guess it's also your body language and all that. it may be fine or people may think you're a bit of a snob. Anti-social is something else and I wouldn't jump to that conclusion, but the snob conclusion. [ Reply | More ]

It seems like a weird attitude to go in with. I understand that you're not looking to make close friends, which is fair enough. But what if you happen to really click with someone? You'll deliberately avoid getting closer because you already have enough friends? [ Reply | More ]

I think it is a bizzare attitude. None of us go in thinking "wow I can't wait to meet my new bff". Making friends is a natural part of life and it is very common to make friends with people who you share experiences with. Why try to fight it. More friends can only enrich your life. [ Reply | More ]

I let my db play in it as soon as he could sit up. I know some people are crazy about it, but I figure they get exposed to germs everywhere. [ Reply | More ]

It depends on the Park and the playground. Most in Central and Riverside are in pretty good shape. I never had a problem with DD playing in them. Some people freak out about it, but I'm not a germophobe. [ Reply | More ]

just let them play in it - the more germs they are exposed to the stronger their immune system will be (and that includes strength against asthma and allergies) [ Reply | More ]
