The 5-mile route thing is true. It's in Chancellor's Regs A-801 section 4, I think. We tried to challenge it at another school and couldn't, so we bring our dd to the closest bus stop to us and feel lucky we have something. [ Reply | More ]

My experience with the DOE is that they are refusing to provide busing outside the 5 limit. This policy makes no sense at the citywides - Anderson, NEST and TAG - of course, since many come from more than 5 miles. The DOE doesn't want to spend the money since they prefer to spend the money on expensive boondoggles like their big computer system and an army of private consultants. [ Reply | More ]

Because 3 hours of enrichment alone with mom (and 6 hours bored in a class of kids who have no attention span and the work is boring) is worse than a 3-hour commute (chill time) and a stimulating school environment with challenging school work and peers that will provide additional fulfillment as friends and classmates. We left #1 with my parents for one week when he was nearly two years old, had done weekends since he was 6mo. Did our first overnight with #1 when he was 3mo (but the pumping was tough!). Then did 5 days away when he was 1.5yo. [ Reply | More ]
