Do you think HYP likes B students at TT or A students at 4th tier/no name schools? I wonder if it'd be better for college admission at least to be a senior at 4th tier with better grades (transfer over later on). I remember a girl in my college who was a valedictorian from the Bronx (South Bronx public) and got admitted but couldn't hack the work and had to leave after only 1 semester. They always prefer B student at TT. That B was hard to achieve, the A at a nothing school means very little [ Reply | More ]

Not true, if it is a school like Harvard or Yale they will take the As, not the Bs even from TT. They may take the top student from 4th tier, not every year but often they will. [ Reply | More ]

What do you mean never? I know kids from Columbia Grammar and BWL that went on to HYP. I know they don't have the numbers TTs do, but I disagree the colleges would never look at kids from those schools. [ Reply | More ]

Is that because you don't want to believe it? [ Reply | More ]

No. That isn't true (depending on all other factors with each kid). School guidance/college counselors will all tell you the same thing - top colleges want the A students. And college prep classes are pretty similar whether at Dalton or at BWL. [ Reply | More ]

actually friends dc at horace mann was told you have a better shot at coming from a high school in montana and being an exceptional student than from nyc tt as they have SO many applications from those schools - they can not admit just kids from nyc. [ Reply | More ]

But Montana is geographic diversity. I'm comparing schools in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

Why would a HYP school take the Bs from any school when they can have the As? Unless there is something else pushing the kid over the top it is not happening. [ Reply | More ]

HYP will only take the top students, plenty of those at TTs, why on earth would they take the Bs (unless they are legacy giving $$$$ or otherwise extremely desirable). [ Reply | More ]

The difference is that at some of the very top tt schools, 10% or more of the kids go to HYP. At another school, top 10% wouldn't cut it. I still think we're talking about A-range grades (unless you're a special exception for one reason or another). [ Reply | More ]

They want the top students from NYC (top students at top tier schools), and then want geographic diversification away from New York. I don't think it does kids any favors for them to be in a non-TT school in the city - better to move west or abroad. [ Reply | More ]

I think if you're coming from either TT or lower tier private in NY, you have to have the grades, and I mean A's, not B's. After that, I think there's probably a second cut, where the top students at the TT have a strong shot at getting in and a top student at a lower tier may or may not, depending on their underlying caliber as judged by other things - recommendations, SATs, essays, extracurriculars, etc. If you look at the "3rd and 4th tier" schools, they all get some students in to top schools some years, they just don't get as many in or as regularly. (But, of course, that's b/c the TT cherry-pick the smartest and most driven students, esp. with their high school admissions.) [ Reply | More ]
